The Big Picture as a decision filter: direction before action.

The more responsibility you carry, the more opportunities, requests, priorities, and competing demands you are likely to face. The difficulty is that many of them may be worthwhile, which makes deciding where to place your time and attention far more complex than simply choosing between a good option and a bad one.

This is where a clear Big Picture becomes useful. It gives you a reference point against which to test what is in front of you, so your decisions stay connected to the direction you have chosen, rather than being shaped only by what feels most immediate or urgent.

You can ask yourself: Does this align with my Big Picture? What will it require from me, and what will receive less attention if I say yes?

In The Way of the Catalyst, I introduce the Big Picture Personal Canvas as a tool for deliberate decision-making across the different areas of life and leadership, helping you make choices with greater coherence rather than evaluating each opportunity in isolation.

A clear direction does more than tell you where you want to go. It also helps you decide what does not need to come with you.

How often does your Big Picture genuinely influence what you say yes to?

Attention is selective, which means the more closely we focus on one part of a situation, the easier it becomes to miss what is happening around it.

A leader concentrating on delivery may overlook how many decisions now depend on one person. A team focused on solving an immediate problem may miss the pattern that keeps recreating it. In both cases, the information is there, but it sits outside the frame receiving most of the attention.

This is why perspective matters. Sometimes the most useful move is to zoom in and examine the detail more closely; at other times, we need enough distance to see the wider system, the competing priorities, the relationships involved, and the assumptions shaping the decisions being made.

When something seems stuck, more information is not always the answer. Sometimes what helps is looking at what you already know from a different vantage point.

What becomes visible when you change your point of view?

A pattern we can see is a pattern we can change.

Recognizing a behavioral pattern does not automatically change it, but it does give us the chance to interrupt it.

A leader may notice that they step in whenever the team hesitates, take over difficult conversations, avoid challenge when relationships feel strained, or become more controlling as pressure increases. Once the pattern becomes visible, the question becomes: is this actually helping in the situation at hand, and is it sustainable over time?

This is where behavioral awareness becomes practical. Instead of repeating a familiar response simply because it is habitual, we can pause long enough to consider its effect, what the situation requires, and whether another approach might lead to a better outcome.

The aim is not constant self-monitoring or trying to behave perfectly. It is having enough awareness to notice when habit is making the decision for us, and to know that we have more than one option available.

What behavioral pattern have you become more aware of recently, and has noticing it helped change the way you respond?

Certainty is a luxury we rarely have. Clarity, though, is what good decisions are made of.

There's a point where more information stops improving the decision and simply delays it. Most leaders have been there. the stakes are high, so waiting for certainty sounds like the responsible thing to do. One more report, one more conversation, one more week to see how things settle.

But leaders rarely get to make important decisions with every variale resolved. Markets shifts, people respond in unexpected ways, new information keeps appearing, and even the best planning cannot tell you exactly how events will unfold. Certainty, in most cases, is simply not on offer. Clarity is. You can be clear about what matters, what you know today, what remains unknown, and which direction makes the most sense with the information and resources you have.

That is often enough to make a considered next move.

As responsibility grows, acting without a guaranteed outcome becomes part of the work. You may not know exactly what will happen next, but you can still be ready to respond intelligently when it does.

Where in your leadership are you waiting for certainty, when you may already have enough clarity to move?

What pressure reveals: not “who we are”, but what we habitually do.

One of the least useful phrases in leadership development is: “That’s just how I am.”

It turns a behavior into an identity, and once something becomes part of who we are, it becomes much harder to question, adapt, or even notice in context.

Pressure tends to make our familiar patterns more visible. One leader becomes highly directive when deadlines tighten, another avoids disagreement, while someone else starts checking every detail, or simply contributes less as the pressure rises. These responses may be well practiced, and they may have served us extremely well in the past, but that does not make them fixed characteristics.

Functional Fluency offers a more practical question:

What am I doing here, and how effective is it in this situation?

Leadership effectiveness depends on having enough behavioral range to respond to different people, pressures, and circumstances. When we can recognize a behavior as something we do, rather than something we are, we create room to examine its effect and choose differently when the situation calls for it.

The way we engage with situations and other people is largely habit, and habits can be reviewed and changed when needed.

Where do you hear “that’s just how I am” most often, from yourself or from other people?

Are you solving a problem or treating a symptom?

A problem that keeps recurring is often a symptom of an underlying, long-standing issue. And treating the symptom, however well, rarely makes the issue go away.

Imagine a team that regularly misses deadlines. The obvious response might be to tighten the timeline, add more checkpoints, or increase the leader’s involvement and, for a while, any one of these changes could improve delivery.

If the problem returns, though, the missed deadline is likely the symptom rather than the problem itself. Priorities could be shifting midway through the work, decisions may be taking too long, responsibilities might not be clear enough, or the team may have gradually learned that, when things become difficult, the leader will eventually step in and take over.

Those are very different issues, even though they all produce the same visible result.

This is why recurring problems deserve a different kind of attention from isolated ones. Rather than moving immediately into solution mode, it helps to examine the conditions surrounding the problem, how long they have been present, and what patterns in the team or wider organization keep reproducing the same outcome.

A useful question is:

If we solved this incident today, what would still be here tomorrow?

Sometimes the greatest progress happens before we solve anything, when we finally name the problem we're really dealing with, and name it precisely.

Many people have become highly skilled at responding to life. Responding to emails. Responding to pressure. Responding to deadlines, requests, problems, expectations and changing demands...

Over time, reaction starts to replace direction. You keep moving, but you are no longer fully choosing how you want to live, lead, relate, or spend your energy.

Today, I’ll be hosting a 90-minute session with the ICF as a contribution to the International Coaching Week.

The session is focused designing your Big Picture Personal Canvas©️— a framework based on The Way of the Catalyst. We’ll explore four dimensions that shape the quality of your personal and professional life: Physical, Emotional, Mental and Social.

This is a space to slow things down for a moment and take an honest look at the bigger picture.

• How is your relationship with your body?
• What is driving your decisions?
• Where do you invest most of your energy?
• What kind of experience are you creating for yourself and the people around you?

Sometimes a small shift in perspective changes the way you approach everything that follows.

If this feels timely for you, I’d love for you to join us.

Today is the day.

My book, The Way of the Catalyst, is live.

This moment feels exciting, a little nerve-wracking, and honestly, quite surreal.

I am genuinely grateful for everyone who has supported me on this journey so far and I would really appreciate your support today, here is a few ways how you can help:

- Buy the Kindle version for $0.99: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F1V3YCZ1 (the link is in my bio)
- Like, comment, or share this post
- Share the book with your network

This book is for leaders whose success is undermined by conflicting demands that drain their time and energy, compromise their effectiveness, and strain their relationships. It provides a clear framework to take control of your inner world, align with what truly matters, and lead with impact without compromising your wellbeing or values.

Through real-life stories, practical tools, and deep insight, this book shows how to live and lead from your Big Picture by adopting five core attitudes that foster clarity, ease and effectiveness.

The reason today matters: the more people who buy and engage today, the more visible the book becomes. Higher visibility means more leaders discover it, and more leaders means greater impact. Your support today helps that message reach further.

Thank you.

P.S. If you are interested in exploring how these principles apply to your leadership or organisation, I would welcome a conversation.

The Way of the Catalyst comes out tomorrow. This book is for leaders, executives, founders, coaches, consultants, parents, teachers, and anyone navigating high demands while trying to honor their commitments without unnecessary compromise.

It is for people stepping into bigger responsibility where technical excellence is no longer enough, or established leaders who sense their way of operating has not evolved at the same pace as their role.

This book teaches you how to operate as a catalyst: creating impact without being consumed in the process, amplifying and choreographing your ripples of influence deliberately instead of scattering them everywhere and hoping something lands.

You get the Big Picture Personal Canvas to create your North Star for clear direction, and the Five Attitudes of the Catalyst: Responsibility, Proactivity, Interdependence, Influence, and Excellence so you can see where you are strong and where you are drifting.

By the end you will know how to lead without slowly losing yourself in the process.

When one leader shifts how they operate, the ripple reaches their teams, their families, their entire ecosystem, and together we shift the culture to make it more sustainable and human for everyone.

The Kindle is discounted for two days only from tomorrow (21st and 22nd).

Check my social tomorrow for the links to buy.
