What Was Palm Healing Therapy in Early Japan?
In 1930, Introduction to Palm Therapy — Te no Hira Ryōji Nyūmon (手のひら療治入門) — was published in Japan, presenting the teachings of Toshihiro Eguchi (江口俊博).
But what exactly was this method?
Its starting point was remarkably simple: placing the hands on another person as a therapeutic practice.
Eguchi did not consider this ability to be reserved for a select few or for people with extraordinary gifts.
Instead, he believed it was a natural human capacity that anyone could develop through learning and practice.
The book explores how the method was taught, how the hands were applied, and the importance of the practitioner's inner attitude.
A little-known connection to the early history of Reiki:
Toshihiro Eguchi studied Usui Reiki in 1925, during Mikao Usui's lifetime.
Following Usui's death in 1926, Eguchi established his own independent method in 1927, known as Te no Hira Ryōji (手のひら療治).
His 1930 publication offers a valuable historical perspective on how Japanese hands-on healing practices developed in the years immediately following Mikao Usui.
Nearly a century later, these original Japanese writings remain important sources for understanding the early history of Reiki and its related traditions.
