I lived in an old warehouse/storefront at 966 Market Street in San Francisco for 9 years back in the 90’s…the tattoo ghosts of America’s past were all around me apparently.
I went with Bill to Chuck Eldridges’s house in Berkeley and when he found out I lived on Market Street he gave me a little book he made documenting the history there.
San Francisco was the epicenter of western tattooing for at least a century. It’s hard to believe now, but almost no one cared about tattooing until very recently. Most records have been lost…things simply thrown away. Lately I’ve been looking through historical photos to see if I can pinpoint any tattoo shop signs.

Doing some spring cleaning… tattooing Al “Rock of Ages” (who famously has the last tattoo done at Lyle Tuttle’s 7th street shop). Horisakura and Daiske watching with Bill just out of the frame.

Horitoshi used to come visit the at least once a year. Took me a long time to comprehend just how lucky I was to be there.🙄

Every word that Filip and Luke speak is exactly how Bill was and exactly how tattooing in San Francisco was in the 90’s. I was fortunate to spend almost everyday for 5 years with him…(and Juni) and to be his last apprentice. No idea what he saw in me at the time but I’m thankful that he had a futuristic vision.
