Wonderful news 🤩🙌

Everyone has the right to receive relevant and accurate health information, including relationships and sexual health education.

Unfortunately, many relationships and sexual health resources are inaccessible to people living with intellectual disability (ID).

Thanks to receiving a Julia Farr Disability Grant, SHINE SA and South Australian Council on Intellectual Disability Inc (SACID) are working together to create new Easy Read resources on the relationships and sexual health topics that matter most to people living with ID.

When a child looks away, seems to zone out or misses part of what you’ve said, it can be easy to assume they weren’t listening.

But attention is not simply a matter of choosing to pay attention.

A child may be trying to listen while also processing background noise, movement, their own thoughts, emotions and everything else happening around them.

Sometimes the issue isn’t that they don’t want to listen.

Their brain may simply be trying to process more information than it can comfortably manage at that moment.

Before assuming “they’re ignoring me”, it can be worth asking:

What else might their brain be trying to process right now?

We often assume that if a child has been corrected enough times, they should know what to do instead.

But knowing what not to do and knowing what to do are different skills.

"Don't yell" doesn't teach how to communicate frustration.
"Don't hit" doesn't teach how to manage big feelings.
"Don't interrupt" doesn't teach how to wait, remember a thought, or join a conversation.

Correction can stop a behaviour in the moment, but learning usually requires something more: teaching, modelling, support, and practice.

Children don't just need limits. They also need guidance.

If you're looking for practical ways to support children's emotional development and build skills beyond behaviour management, my book Guidance from The Therapist Parent is available at www.thetherapistparent.com and on Amazon.

What is one skill you find yourself teaching repeatedly?

A child who shouts, refuses, hits, withdraws, lies, clings, or seems "difficult" is often telling us something they cannot put into words.

Behaviour is communication.

Behind many behaviours there may be fear, anxiety, shame, confusion, grief, sensory overwhelm, unmet needs, or experiences that adults may not yet fully understand.

When we only react to the behaviour, we can miss the message.

When we stop and ask, "What is this child trying to tell me?" everything changes.

Children do not always need harsher consequences. Sometimes they need safety. Sometimes they need understanding. Sometimes they need help making sense of big feelings that they cannot manage alone.

This simple shift in thinking can transform how parents, carers, teachers and professionals support children.

If more people understood that behaviour is communication, fewer children would be labelled as "naughty" and more would get the support they need.

At Allied Developmental Care (ADC), we acknowledge National Reconciliation Week 2026 and this year’s theme, “ALL IN.”

As allied health providers, being “ALL IN” means delivering inclusive, accessible supports for all people with disabilities, while strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities 🤲

We recognise the deep connection Aboriginal people have to Country, and the importance of land in culture, identity, and healing. We also value the role of community, building stronger connections, listening, and walking alongside people to improve wellbeing together 🌱

At ADC, we are committed to growing these connections and continuing the journey of reconciliation through respect, partnership, and shared action 💛
