🫘💥 What Happens When a Kidney Stone Forms?

Kidney stones are solid deposits that can form when certain substances in the urine become concentrated and crystallize.

🔹 Common symptoms:
• Severe pain in the lower back or side (flank)
• Pain that may travel toward the groin
• Nausea or vomiting
• Blood in the urine

🔬 Diagnosis may include a urine test and imaging studies, such as ultrasound or CT scan, depending on the situation.

💧 Treatment depends on the stone’s size, location, and composition. Some stones may pass naturally, while others require medication or procedures.

🚨 Seek urgent medical attention for fever or chills, difficulty urinating, severe persistent pain, or continuous vomiting.

✨ Maintaining adequate hydration and reducing excessive salt intake may help lower the risk of certain types of kidney stones.

✅ Posterior Oblique Sling — The Body’s Cross-Body Power System

▪️The posterior oblique sling is a functional connection of muscles and fascia that helps transfer force diagonally across the back of the body. It is especially active during walking, running, throwing, and rotational sports such as golf.

🟣 Latissimus Dorsi
→ A large back muscle involved in shoulder extension, adduction, and internal rotation.
→ It contributes to transferring forces between the upper body and trunk.

🟣 Thoracolumbar Fascia
→ A strong connective-tissue structure in the lower back.
→ Provides an important mechanical connection between the latissimus dorsi, trunk muscles, pelvis, and gluteal region.

🟣 Gluteus Maximus
→ A powerful hip extensor and external rotator.
→ Helps stabilize the pelvis and generate force during activities such as running, climbing, and rising from a squat.

🟣 How the sling works
→ The latissimus dorsi on one side functionally connects through the thoracolumbar fascia with the opposite gluteus maximus.
→ This diagonal relationship can assist trunk and pelvic stability and the transfer of forces between the upper and lower body.

🔵 The glowing cyan pathway in the illustration represents this cross-body kinetic connection. It is a biomechanical concept, not a separate anatomical structure or nerve pathway.

⚠️ Dysfunction or weakness in one component may influence movement patterns, but pain cannot be diagnosed from the sling alone and can have many causes.

💉 Femoral Nerve Block: How It Provides Pain Relief
➟ A femoral nerve block is a regional anesthesia technique in which local anesthetic is placed near the femoral nerve to temporarily reduce pain sensation.
➟ It is commonly used to provide pain relief involving the:
• Front of the thigh
• Knee
• Femur
• Certain hip and lower-limb procedures
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🟡 Femoral Nerve
➟ The femoral nerve originates mainly from the L2–L4 nerve roots of the lumbar plexus.
➟ It travels through the pelvis and passes beneath the inguinal ligament into the thigh.
Highlighted Functions
➟ Supplies motor function to the quadriceps muscles
➟ Helps with knee extension
➟ Contributes to hip flexion
➟ Provides sensation to much of the anterior thigh
➟ Through the saphenous nerve, provides sensation to parts of the medial leg and foot
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
💉 How the Femoral Nerve Block Works
➟ A needle is carefully positioned close to the femoral nerve.
➟ Local anesthetic is injected around the nerve.
➟ The medication temporarily interrupts transmission of pain signals through the nerve.
Expected Effects
➟ Reduced pain sensation
➟ Numbness in the nerve distribution
➟ Temporary quadriceps weakness may occur
➟ Improved pain control during or after certain procedures
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔵 Iliacus Fascia
➟ The femoral nerve travels in the region beneath the iliac fascia (fascia iliaca).
➟ Understanding these fascial planes helps clinicians position local anesthetic appropriately during regional anesthesia.
➟ Ultrasound guidance is commonly used to visualize relevant anatomy and monitor needle placement and anesthetic spread.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🟢 Nearby Nerves
➟ Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
Provides sensation mainly to the outer thigh.
➟ Genitofemoral nerve
Its branches contribute sensation to parts of the upper anterior thigh and genital/groin region.
➟ Obturator nerve
Provides motor supply to many of the thigh adductor muscles and sensory/articular contributions to the medial thigh and joints.
➟ These nerves are anatomically distinct, and a standard femoral nerve block does not reliably block all of them.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🏥 Common Clinical Uses
➟ Femoral nerve blocks may be considered for:
• Femoral fractures
• Knee surgery
• Certain procedures involving the anterior thigh
• Acute traumatic pain
• Postoperative pain management
➟ The exact technique depends on the procedure, patient, and desired area of anesthesia.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
⚠️ Possible Risks & Side Effects
➟ Temporary leg numbness
➟ Quadriceps weakness
➟ Increased risk of falling while the block is active
➟ Bruising or bleeding
➟ Infection
➟ Local anesthetic toxicity
➟ Accidental vascular puncture
➟ Rare nerve injury
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🚨 Seek Medical Attention If
➟ Severe or increasing pain develops after the procedure
➟ Weakness or numbness persists longer than expected
➟ Increasing redness, swelling, or discharge occurs at the injection site
➟ Breathing difficulty, severe dizziness, seizures, or other concerning symptoms occur after local anesthetic administration
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
