October is Mental Health Month across Australia, coordinated nationally by Mental Health Australia, with World Mental Health Day falling on October 10th. This year’s national theme, “Together We Thrive,” is a reminder that connection and community play a real role in how well we cope.

Mental health isn’t separate from physical health — they’re deeply linked, and looking after one supports the other. Yet it’s common to put off talking about how you’re feeling until things feel unmanageable, rather than when the early signs first appear.

This month is a good prompt to check in — not just with yourself, but with the people around you. A low mood, trouble sleeping, or feeling constantly overwhelmed are all worth mentioning to someone, even if nothing feels “wrong enough” to warrant it.

If something has been sitting with you, your GP is a good place to start that conversation: www.crafter.health/bookings

Not sure where to start with your mental health? Start with a conversation.

A longer GP appointment gives you time to talk through how you’ve been feeling, what’s been happening in your life, and what might help. Your GP will listen, assess, and work with you on the next steps that suit you.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, your GP may talk to you about a Mental Health Care Plan. This can provide subsidised mental health support through registered practitioners. It’s a subsidy towards the cost of sessions, not fully funded care, so there may still be a cost to you.

Interested? Speak with your GP about whether a plan is right for you. Book a longer appointment at Crafter Health: www.crafter.health/bookings

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian men, yet early signs can be subtle.

If you have a family history or are over 50, a conversation with your GP about your risk is important.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and 2026 has brought Australia’s first major update to prostate cancer screening guidelines in a decade.

Prostate cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages, which is part of why proactive screening matters — but changes such as difficulty urinating, a weaker stream, or needing to go more often (especially at night) are still worth mentioning to your GP.

Your individual risk — including age, family history and ethnicity — shapes what screening looks like for you, and the new guidelines place a greater focus on this personalised approach.

If it’s been a while since you’ve discussed your prostate health, it’s worth checking whether the updated guidelines change your recommended plan.

September marks Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week — a timely reminder to check in on your own health.

Preventative health isn’t the same for everyone. What checks you need, and how often, depends on a range of factors — your age, s*x, personal and family medical history, and environmental risk factors.

This month, take a moment to ask yourself — and prompt those around you — what checks are you due for?

If you’re unsure, Jean Hailes offers a free tool designed specifically for women. You’ll be asked a few quick questions about your age, ethnicity, and location, and it will give you a personalised list of health checks to consider, along with how often they’re recommended.

Print off your results and bring them in to discuss with your doctor — what’s up to date, what’s not, and what you might need to plan for.
