ECG and Echocardiogram: What Is the Difference?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram (Echo) are different cardiac tests, even though their names can sound similar.

An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity. It can provide information about your heart rate and rhythm.

An Echo uses ultrasound to create moving images of the heart. It provides information about the heart’s structure and function.

Your GP or specialist may recommend one of these tests, or both, based on your symptoms, medical history and the information needed for your care. If you are unsure which test appears on your referral, ask your referring doctor or our team.

World Restart a Heart Day
Today, Heart & Vascular is recognising World Restart a Heart Day and the importance of knowing how to respond to a cardiac arrest.

The Australian Resuscitation Council shares a simple message: Call. Push. Shock.

Call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance and follow the call taker’s instructions. Start CPR. If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, turn it on and follow its prompts.

Learning CPR and becoming familiar with AEDs can help people feel more prepared to act in an emergency. Consider taking a CPR course or refreshing your skills.

Cardiology Education Evening for General Practice
Heart & Vascular recently brought together GPs and healthcare professionals for a cardiology education evening in Adelaide’s north eastern suburbs.

Two of our cardiologists shared insights on:
• Dr Ranjit Shah – the connection between chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease.
• Dr Rahil Moriswala – lipids, including cholesterol, and acute coronary syndrome, which includes heart attacks.

The presentations gave attendees an opportunity to discuss these topics and their relevance to patient care in general practice.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion. We value opportunities to share knowledge and strengthen collaboration with referring GPs across South Australia.

Today, 29 September, is World Heart Day!
This year’s campaign, Don’t Miss a Beat, encourages people to recognise possible signs of cardiovascular disease, understand their risk factors and take practical steps to support their heart health.

At Heart & Vascular, we know that early assessment, diagnosis and ongoing care can make a meaningful difference. Heart health is not only about symptoms. Risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart rhythm concerns may not always be obvious.

If you have concerns about your heart health, speak with your GP. They can review your symptoms, risk factors and medical history, and advise whether a Heart Health Check or further cardiac assessment may be appropriate.

Advanced CTCA Imaging at Hawthorn: What It Means for Patients
Since May, Heart & Vascular has been using the GE Revolution Vibe CT scanner at our Hawthorn Clinic.

This advanced cardiac CT technology is designed to deliver fast, high-quality coronary imaging while supporting patient comfort and accessibility.
CT coronary angiography, commonly known as CTCA, is one of a range of cardiac CT scans available at Hawthorn.

What is a CTCA?
A CTCA is a specialised scan that creates detailed images of the coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle. Your GP or specialist may recommend a CTCA to help assess whether there may be narrowing in the coronary arteries that could be contributing to symptoms.

The GE Revolution Vibe offers:
• Fast image capture, with technology that can enable one-beat image acquisition
• AI-assisted imaging workflows designed to support high-quality coronary images
• The potential for lower radiation and iodine doses where clinically appropriate
• A wide 80 cm opening designed to support patient comfort
• A table capacity of up to 300 kg to support patient accessibility

Your scan will be performed by one of our dedicated radiographers and reviewed and reported by a Heart & Vascular cardiologist.

The report will then be provided to your referring doctor, who will discuss the results and any recommended next steps with you.

Referral and Medicare information
GP and specialist referrals are accepted for CTCA.
A GP-referred CTCA does not attract a Medicare rebate. A specialist-referred CTCA may attract a Medicare rebate when the relevant MBS requirements are met and the clinical indication is included in the referral.

Is CTCA appropriate for you?
Speak with your GP or specialist about whether CTCA may be suitable for your individual circumstances.

For information about CTCA referrals, fees or appointment availability, please contact our Hawthorn team.

City to Bay 2026 – A Great Day with Our Team and Community
On Sunday, 30 members of the Heart & Vascular team and their families took part in the 2026 City to Bay as the Heart & Vascular Pace Setters.

Our team was represented across the 6km and 12km events, with a special congratulations to A/Prof Ajay Sinhal, who completed the 21km half marathon in an impressive time of 1:38:55.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our team to come together outside the clinic, enjoy one of South Australia’s best known community events and connect with participants and families throughout the day.

We also enjoyed welcoming visitors to the Heart & Vascular site in the City to Bay Village and sharing more about the cardiac services we provide across metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia.

Thank you to everyone who took part, visited our site or supported the team on the day.
