We love finding fun, playful ways to support children’s development!

Here’s what we’ll be working on with our new resources:

🎈 Balloon covers: Hand-eye coordination, visual tracking, bilateral coordination, motor planning and timing.

✨ And of course, plenty of opportunities for turn-taking, following instructions, problem-solving and building confidence!

Happy OT Week!

This OT Week, we’re celebrating the power of participation! 🌈✨

At Upside Down Therapy, participation is at the heart of everything we do. It’s about so much more than simply taking part - it’s about feeling included, having choices, building confidence and being able to engage in the things that matter most. 💛

We asked our wonderful team what participation means to them, and we love how each person brings their own perspective to something so central to our therapy journeys.

Because participation looks different for everyone, and that’s what makes it so meaningful!

Happy OT Week to all the incredible OTs making a difference, one meaningful moment at a time! 🫶

Progress doesn’t always look like a milestone. 💛

For children with complex needs, progress can look different from what we might expect.

It might be:

✨ Tolerating a new experience
👉 Making a choice
💬 Communicating a preference
🤝 Joining an activity for the first time
🌱 Trying something again after finding it difficult
💛 Recovering from dysregulation and returning when they’re ready

These moments might seem small from the outside, but they can represent huge steps for that child.

Progress isn’t about comparing one child to another or ticking every box on a developmental checklist.

It’s about understanding what matters to that child and celebrating the steps that help them participate, communicate, connect and feel more confident in their everyday world.

Sometimes progress is quiet. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it looks like trying again.

And every step forward matters. 💛

If you’re wondering what progress could look like for your child, reach out for support.

What if support could reach the whole kindy, not just one child?

Kindy Uplift is about building educator knowledge and confidence so they can better understand and support the children in their care.

Together, we can explore:
🌱 Children’s development
🧠 Sensory needs
💛 Regulation
🤝 Participation and inclusion
💡 Practical strategies that can be used every day

Because the value isn’t simply another therapy session.

It’s giving educators practical knowledge and strategies they can use every day, with every child.

When educators feel more confident, the whole kindy can become more inclusive, responsive and supportive.

Is your kindy looking for practical ways to support inclusion and participation?

Communication is more than words. 💛

For non-speaking children, communication can look like AAC, gestures, eye gaze, facial expressions, movement, sounds, body language, leading an adult toward something, or a change in behaviour.

Non-speaking does not mean non-communicating.

Every child communicates — our job is to learn how to listen to it.

If you’re unsure what your child’s communication is telling you, reach out for support. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

What actually happens in an OT assessment?

If your child is starting therapy, or you're applying for or reviewing an NDIS plan, an Occupational Therapy assessment is often the first step — and we know it can feel like a mystery.

In simple terms, an assessment helps us understand:
🔍 How your child processes sensory information
🔍 Their fine and gross motor development
🔍 How they manage daily tasks like dressing, writing or play
🔍 What support would make the biggest difference

From there, we put together a clear report with practical recommendations — useful for therapy planning, schools, or NDIS documentation.

No guesswork, just a genuine understanding of the 'why' behind your child's challenges.

To the parents, deep breath - you are doing more than you know 💛

Caring for a child with additional needs is rarely the parenting story we picture growing up. It can be appointments, therapy homework, meltdowns in public, and a constant mental load that's hard for others to see.

If that's you: you're doing an enormous amount, even on the days it doesn't feel like it. Showing up, advocating, learning, adjusting — that is the work, and it matters.

Our Caregiver Education and Support service exists to make sure you're not carrying it alone. Whether that's practical strategies, a listening ear, or simply space to ask questions, we're here for the whole family — not just the child in front of us.

If you need support, we're just a message away.
