I am now running 3 clinical exercise classes that are Parkinson’s specific in Altona

1. Classes are small to allow for individual attention

2. Claimable on NDIS and private health as they are run by Clinical Exercises Physiologist - me - and I specialise in Parkinson’s

3. The classes running :

Boxing, Functional Movement and Strength

If you would like more information send me a message and if you know someone who would benefit from these classes please share with them as exercise has been scientifically proven to help reduce symptoms ( both motor and non motor) as well as slow progression

Often we forget that fatigue is not just a body experience - but is experienced in the brain as well. As I am still recovering from a concussion - this is very helpful in understanding my limits.

This scale is really great so when I find myself approaching a 4 - it is time to complete what I am doing and take a break to reset and rest as PUSHING through makes everything worse and takes longer to come back from.

So stopping before it goes too high is important for building capacity - nudge gently into symptoms - as recovery is not a sprint but a marathon 🧠

Why I teach and recommend PWR!MOVES to my clients living with Parkinson’s

What Parkinson's does to movement isn't just slowness.

It creates smaller and guarded movements and over time, the brain quietly convinces itself that small, guarded movements are normal and this needs to be challenged with something different and bigger.

Thus - PWR!Moves was created specifically to address these changes in movements.

PWR! was Developed by Dr. Becky Farley, a physical therapist and neuroscientist who founded Parkinson Wellness Recovery ( PWR!)

Before PWR!, Becky co-created LSVT BIG, one of the first whole-body, amplitude-focused therapy programs for Parkinson's, and led the initial research proving its benefits.

Over time Becky recognised that no two people experience Parkinson's the same way, and that a truly effective approach needed to be tailored to each person's specific goals and symptoms.

That's how PWR!Moves was born, a Parkinson-specific approach that trains amplitude with functional building blocks, each one counteracting a primary motor control deficit that can interfere with everyday movements

PWR! was one of the first exercise programs to earn accreditation from the Parkinson's Foundation and this accreditation exists to make sure people with Parkinson's are getting genuinely safe, effective, parkinsons specific instruction, not generic fitness training applied to a clinical condition.

It's targeted, research-driven retraining of the exact movement patterns Parkinson's effects first.

PWR! Moves helps to rebuild the foundations for everyday functions like : getting up, turning, walking, reaching, stepping and much much more.

Specific movement matters !!!

This is just one of the programs I have trained in to use with my clients living with Parkinson’s.

So get ready to get BIG! 💪🔋🥊

I saw this on another Parkinson’s exercise site and thought it was hilarious as this is exactly what I often say to my clients and then I get a “LOOK” that says it all. Lol .

Is good to know that I am not the only one who says this 🥊💪🤪

Nothing Grinds my gears more than the information I see “ well meaning” individuals on social media offering exercise advice that is not suitable or tailored to an individual with a health condition.

They don’t offer alternatives to modify, adjust and don’t mention contraindications - as it is not a one size fits all recipe.

If you have any type of health condition - please see someone or follow someone who is qualified ( EP, physio etc) and is offering suggestions within their trained scope of practice.

Why this post? I am seeing so much on osteoporosis recommendations - which is fantastic that people are talking about it - but not all moves/ jumps are safe or appropriate for everyone.

As an Exercise Physiologist , yogi and movement geek - I specialise in brain and body exercise - not just for neurological conditions but for every*body

When we keep our feet constantly in shoes and socks, the brain starts treating them as restricted

The padded soles and pointy shoes can create sensory deprivation to the feet and can lead to toe curling, cramping, tight plantar fascia, and dystonia-like symptoms - which are very painful and can become a barrier to moving

Barefoot walking restores natural proprioception (your body’s internal sense of position and movement), wakes up the small foot muscles that have become sleepy and helps to improve balance and can reduce compensation patterns that can lead to shuffling, stiffness, reduced mobility and falls.

Studies report: barefoot or minimal footwear training improves foot strength, gait stability, sensory feedback, and overall mobility in people with neurological and age-related movement issues.

Now I know this may not be for everyone - no worries - you are the boss of you.

But if you are curious - give it a try and kick off the slippers, the pointy shoes and the sneakers that are like walking on clouds and reconnect with the ground and your feet

Make sure to have any mobility aids or support humans needed for safety and give it a try for a few minutes a day.

Release your feet, wiggle and spread your toes and see if this makes a difference for you.

Do it daily and you may notice improved foot strength, fewer cramps, improved balance, and more fluid and confident movement

***Your heels are 4 power, your toes are 4 balance***
