For almost 20 years now I have been getting out of my comfort zone, daily.
This is why ..
Modern life has many hooks and constantly draws us towards seeking pleasure yet inevitably it is a road to no where which leads us towards temporary happiness. Couple this with the complexities of trying to survive in modern life and pleasure becomes an outlet we chase ruthlessly.
I think it was Queen that wrote a song which goes pain is so close to pleasure. In modern life we avoid pain relentlessly to stay in a constant place of pleasure.
Self discipline was something that never came naturally to me. I was always last in the running races at School and felt like any achievement was a pipe dream. Spending a good chunk of my early childhood in hospital meant that my coordination was off and I avoided any challenge like the plague.
It wasn’t until later in my 30’s that I discovered fitness which led me to achieve high results. Something I yearned when I was a kid but could never get there. Then I leant a greater level of self discipline through meditation.
Then came Kundalini Yoga …
And things went to a whole new level.
After my first class I felt the best I had in my 40 years in this body. After the second class even better. Then in 2018 I became a teacher. The teachings and practices are profound and it’s something I do every day. I encourage anyone interested in reaching their potential that seeks to have an extraordinary life and not just an ordinary one to explore Kundalini Yoga.
I asked ChatGPT for the top 10 benefits. They are true but there is so much more.
1: Nervous System Regulation: Rhythmic breathwork and kriyas (sets of exercises) train your body to shift quickly from high stress to calm.
2: Improved Breathing Technique: Practices like Breath of Fire and Sitali breath teach you how to use specific breathing patterns to manage anxiety or boost focus.
3: Relief for Back, Neck, and Shoulders: Repeated, gentle spinal movements and joint postures loosen stiffness, especially for people who sit at a desk all day.
4: Reduced Irritation and Reactivity: Chanting, movement, and deep relaxation help release built-up physical and emotional tension before it turns into frustration.
5: Structured Meditation Skills: It moves past vague advice to "clear your mind" by teaching specific mantra and silent meditation techniques.
6: Better Emotional Resilience: The practice lowers cortisol and calms the parasympathetic nervous system, helping you respond to chaos with a pause instead of a reaction.
7: Boosted Creativity and Intuition: Techniques like alternate-nostril breathing synchronize the left and right brain to spark imagination and sharpen inner guidance.
8: Deeper Self-Awareness: Regular sessions create space for self-reflection, helping you understand your personal patterns, triggers, and motivations.
9: Spiritual Awakening and Self-Discovery: The practice connects you to your inner identity, personal mission, and a sense of higher purpose.
10: Increased Flexibility and Core Strength: Physical kriyas expand lung capacity, build core stability, and improve overall physical vitality
I was lucky enough to teach at this years festival in Northern New South Wales. If you are curious about what Sat Nam means look it up !
This practice can be done by people of all ages and abilities. That’s what makes it so special.
If we stay in our comfort zone we simply wont grow.
I hope this may make you seek to have an extraordinary life and not just an ordinary one.
