Yesterday, I officially completed my Master’s placement with Communities at Work
Over the course of the year, I have completed 350 hours of placement across many different locations and communities in Canberra and what an incredible learning experience it has been.
My placement has taken me into community spaces, schools, outdoor environments and staffrooms, creating opportunities for people to experiment create and reconnect with themselves through art.
I have:
*Facilitated pop-up art therapy sessions at Tuggeranong Community Centre and Denman Village Community Centre
*Joined the Nature Journal Circle and explored outdoor art experiences
*Worked within a local school, creating a safe and supportive space for students aged 7–10 to create
*Facilitated wellbeing programs for whole-school staff, including teachers, youth workers, LSAs and support staff
*Facilitated a multi-session Artist Book art therapy program for the Ngunnawal Community
*Created opportunities for people to slow down, experiment and play without needing to be “good at art”
*Collected data showing that participants experienced more energy, less overwhelm, greater grounding and more internal space following the sessions
For me, this placement has been about much more than completing 350 hours.
It has been about discovering what happens when we bring art therapy out into the community and make space for creativity, connection and wellbeing in places where people already live, work and gather.
I am incredibly grateful to Communities at Work and the Galilee Communities at Work Galilee School for giving me the opportunity to learn, experiment and contribute within the community over the past year.
And now, as I complete this chapter of my Master's journey, I am looking forward to the next one bringing more grant-funded opportunities for people to access and experience art therapy within their own communities.
350 hours completed.
A lot learned.
A lot created.
A lot more to come.
