Do I Need to Change My Breast Implants Every 10 Years? Debunking the 10-Year Breast Implant Expiry Myth

In this video, Dr Eddy Dona addresses a common misconception about breast implants – that they must be replaced every 10 years.

The truth is: breast implants don’t have an expiry date. There’s no rule saying they must be changed at 10 years if they’re still working well & your breasts look & feel good.

It’s important to understand:
• Over time, breasts naturally change due to ageing, weight shifts & other factors.
• Complications like implant rupture or capsular contracture can occur, possibly requiring surgery.
• In such cases, an implant exchange or revision may be needed.

However, if your implants are intact, your breasts look good, feel good & you’re happy with the result, there’s no need to routinely replace them at 10 years.

Cup Size & Breast Implants

In this video, Dr Eddy Dona explains why breast implant decisions should focus on achieving your desired aesthetic result—not choosing an implant based on bra cup size.

Cup size is unreliable for surgical planning because:
• It's based on bra fitting—the difference between the measurement under the bust and across the fullest part of the breast.
• It doesn't directly correlate to implant volume or actual breast size.
• Cup sizing varies across brands, styles, and countries.

At Dr Dona’s practice, everything starts with understanding your goals—how you want your breasts to look in terms of size, shape, and proportion.

Implants are selected to match that vision, factoring in your unique anatomy, skin, and chest dimensions.

OPEN BOOK ABDOMINOPLASTY

Regular followers of Dr Dona will be familiar with the Open Book Tummy Tuck™. What many may not know is that he pioneered the procedure himself.

Now published in the international peer-reviewed plastic surgery journal, the technique is formally described in the surgical literature, adding to the options available to surgeons treating patients with complex patterns of abdominal and torso tissue excess.

Traditional abdominoplasty techniques remain effective options for appropriately selected patients. However, in some patients following massive weight loss, Dr Dona found that these approaches did not adequately address the extent and pattern of excess tissue - particularly across the upper abdomen.

The Open Book Tummy Tuck™ was developed in response to this challenge, with the aim of addressing excess tissue across both the upper and lower abdomen while also repairing underlying abdominal wall laxity. When combined with a bra lipectomy or belt lipectomy, the approach can extend circumferentially to address excess tissue around the torso.

After years of developing and refining the procedure, and following requests from local and international plastic surgeons, Dr Dona published his technique to share the approach and his clinical experience.

The publication provides a step-by-step description of the surgical technique alongside an analysis of patient outcomes. This allows other surgeons to assess the approach, learn how it is performed and consider its role in treating their own patients.
