Achhhoooo!
I have been getting lots of questions about the best way to reduce hayfever symptoms.
Naturopathically, there is lots we can do to help support hayfever sufferers but a simple way to start is by looking at what you are consuming in your diet.
Have a read below about how you can support yourself at home.
Hayfever & Histamine
Hayfever is caused by an increase in histamine. Histamine is one the body's defense responses to inflammation, an injury or exposure to an allergen (dust, mould, grass, pollen). Histamine is an important part of our body's immune response and is beneficial as long as it is kept within ranges our body is able to maintain.
Histamine is eliminated by the body by an enzyme called DAO. However, if histamine is not able to be effectively eliminated it starts to accumulate and this is when we get symptoms of excess histamine - itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, headaches, excess mucus, bloating, asthma and eczema/dermatitis.
Histamine & Diet
Histamine is also naturally present in the foods we eat and when you are experiencing symptoms of excess histamine it can be beneficial to eat an antihistamine diet. It is important to avoid foods that are high in histamine and there are also foods that block our DAO enzyme (remember we want this enzyme because it helps us to eliminate histamine effectively).
So, what foods should you eat and what should you be avoiding I hear you ask.
Comment "hayfever" below and we will send you a list of foods to include and foods to avoid.
