Sowing Seeds of Health, Harmony, and Community I Dr Lam Tai Chi & Health Newsletter (October 2026) -

These workshops reminded me once again how effective Tai Chi for Health is. Tai chi can be enjoyed, and bring health benefits...

Seamless Tai Chi: Lessons in Flow from Culture Park

While visiting Xining, China, to train for a high-altitude trek around Mount Kailash in Tibet—my personal effort to prove that turning 80 doesn't mean it's time for the coffin—I stumbled upon a group practicing tai chi on a brilliantly sunny day in Culture Park.

Intrigued, I gathered the courage to join them. But after the very first posture, I realized I was hopelessly lost. Though we were both practicing a Yang style, their sequence was unfamiliar. I stepped back to simply observe.

You could almost feel the chi radiating into the park. They moved slowly and deliberately, each posture having a clear beginning and end while flowing seamlessly into the next. It was mesmerising so much so that even as a spectator, I felt grounded by their energy. Through improvised sign language afterward, I learned they were practicing the Yang 85 form. No wonder my own routines hadn't matched up.

When I first learned tai chi through Dr. Paul Lam's videos while living in a remote area without phone service, the step-by-step format naturally led me to pause at the end of each taught section. Even when watching the full demonstrations, I missed the deeper connection. I hadn't truly internalised Dr. Lam’s key teaching: “There is a beginning and an end, but no beginning and end.”

Watching the group in Xining finally unlocked that concept for me. Seeing their seamless movement changed my perspective, and it continues to shape my own practice today as I keep working toward that effortless flow.
