Seeing your baby’s face for the first time is a moment you don’t forget 💙

At the 20-22 week morphology scan, the face is more than just a cute photo. Your sonographer takes a systematic approach, looking through the features one by one: the profile, nasal bone, eyes, nose and lips to name a few.

It’s one of the many parts of this detailed scan, and it’s why we take the time to get the pictures, and the information, right.

Book your morphology scan with QUFW at qufw.com.au.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

For many families, an ultrasound is where they first learn that something is wrong.

As sonographers, we can’t change the news, but we can change how it’s delivered. With guidance from the The Pink Elephants Support Network, we aim to:

đź’™ Communicate gently, with empathy, clearly and without rushing
đź’™ Validate the loss. It matters, and grief is a natural response
đź’™ Provide information in plain language about what we see and what may happen next
💙 Refer to support organisations that fit each person’s needs
đź’™ Offer a follow-up appointment to check physical and mental wellbeing

If you or someone you love is going through pregnancy or infant loss, you are not alone. The Pink Elephants Support Network offers support, resources and community at https://www.pinkelephants.org.au/

A QUFW gynaecological ultrasound looks well beyond the uterus and ovaries. We also assess the urethra, va**na, adnexa, Pouch of Douglas, uterosacral ligaments, bladder, ureters, the outer lining of the bowel, re**um and pelvic sidewall.

Some findings may be incidental, and others may help explain your symptoms.

Our sonographers are dedicated to achieving a comprehensive scan of the whole pelvis, so you get all the information you need. đź’™

PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) is the new name for PCOS, agreed by 56 organisations and over 14,360 people with the condition and health professionals worldwide (Lancet global consensus, 2026). The old name implied ovarian cysts, but the ultrasound appearance is actually arrested follicular development, not true cysts (Lancet global consensus, 2026). Up to 70% of people with PMOS remain undiagnosed (Lancet global consensus, 2026).

Diagnosis needs 2 of 3 criteria: irregular or absent ovulation, signs of excess androgens, or polycystic ovaries on ultrasound and an elevated Anti-MĂĽllerian Hormone level (Lancet global consensus, 2026). That ultrasound criterion is where our sonographers come in.

PMOS also involves insulin resistance and metabolic effects, present in around 85% of those affected (PMOS Terminology Update, 2026).

Endometriosis can be tricky to find on ultrasound. It can appear on various structures in the pelvis, and picking it up takes more than a routine scan.

At QUFW, our sonographer’s are trained to know exactly what to look for and where it likes to hide, and our doctors are exeperts at translating those findings into something a laparoscopic surgeon can act on.

A lot of women are referred to QUFW to check an IUD to check the uterus prior to insertion, to make sure it’s sitting in the correct place, or investigating issues that have started since placement.

An IUD is easy to spot on ultrasound, and a transva**nal scan lets us see exactly where it is. If there's any uncertainty, a 3D scan may provide us with the clearest interpretation of the device's position.

If you have an IUD and you're dealing with pain or ongoing bleeding, or you're due for a check, talk to your doctor about a referral.

If you've been told you have a short cervix or cervical insufficiency: neither is something you've caused, and neither is a verdict on your pregnancy. Both are recognised, manageable, and closely monitored.

A short cervix is a measurement under 25mm on transva**nal ultrasound and it’s a risk marker that needs to be monitored.

Cervical insufficiency is a diagnosis: the cervix opening prematurely, usually painlessly in the second trimester. It's diagnosed holistically and takes into account your history, a clinical exam, and a transva**nal scan. A short cervix can be a step toward this, but most don't progress that far.

Management is usually va**nal progesterone or, in some cases, a cervical cerclage (a supportive stitch). Your obstetrician will guide you on the best option for your situation. With monitoring by ultrasound and a plan, most women go on to have a healthy baby.

PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome), formerly known as PCOS, is one of the most common, and most under-diagnosed, hormonal and metabolic conditions affecting women.

PMOS can impact fertility, mental health, and long-term metabolic health, from irregular cycles to a higher risk of anxiety, depression and type 2 diabetes.

Diagnosis relies on a combination of factors, and ultrasound plays a key role. A transva**nal scan can identify the follicle pattern on the ovaries that's one of the diagnostic markers for PMOS.

If you're experiencing irregular cycles, or have questions about your own scan results, speak with your doctor or fertility specialist.
