For many Year 12 students, their NDIS plan may have been created years ago and may no longer reflect the supports needed for life after school. Recent NDIS legislative changes are affecting how plan reassessments are considered for school leavers.
Key things families should know:
✅ Finishing school alone may not be enough to justify a plan reassessment
✅ Evidence must show a significant and ongoing change in support needs
✅ Changes in education, employment, living arrangements, or informal supports may be relevant
✅ Supporting reports should clearly explain the new support needs and how they relate to the participant's disability and functional capacity
The transition from school to adult life can bring exciting opportunities, but it also requires careful planning. Understanding what evidence is needed and starting conversations early can help young people prepare for work, further education, community participation, and greater independence.
At BLSSWA, we encourage families to start planning well before the end of Year 12 to ensure supports are in place for a successful transition into the next stage of life.
