3 ways plan managers can support participants with funding periods

Plan managers help participants understand and manage their NDIS funding. This includes funding periods.

There are 3 ways plan managers can support participants with funding periods.
1. Provide education on funding periods
Explain how funding periods work and what happens when all available funding for a funding period is used.

Agree upfront on how to manage any claims that can't be processed straight away.
2. Give regular budget updates
Send monthly statements that show how much of their budget the participant is using.

If spending is tracking faster than expected, let participants know early so they can adjust their supports and spending if needed.
3. Submit claims promptly
Check claims meet NDIS requirements and submit them to the NDIS as soon as possible.

Submitting claims promptly gives participants a clearer picture of their available funding and reduces the risk of payment issues later.

From 1 December 2026, claims submitted more than 90 days after a support is delivered in full will not be paid, unless exceptional circumstances apply.

Plan managers should ensure participants and the providers that deliver NDIS supports to them are aware of this new requirement.

Unused funds and outstanding claims can only be managed within the participant's current plan. They can't be rolled over beyond the plan end date.
