Full disclosure, I’ve been back on the dating apps lately, and somewhere between “whats your favourite colour and where do you see yourself in 5 years I realised herbs would make far better profiles.

Herbal medicine is clear about what they’re looking for, honest about their red flags, and genuinely good for you ha ha!

When i think about it, plants are a lot like people in a way, every single one has a type, a love language, and a couple of red flags you really want to know about before you commit.

Have you ever heard of oestrogen dominance before?

In a nutshell….your liver takes out your excess oestrogen, but your gut may bring it back in. Or if you don’t 💩!

Beta glucuronidase is a gut enzyme that can unpack oestrogen your liver has already sent out for removal.

If it’s lower in range → oestrogen leaves as it should.
If it’s higher in range → it’s recycled back in your gorgeous little body, feeding oestrogen dominance.

Do you ever experience these?

• Heavy, long or clotty periods
• Painful periods
• Shorter cycles or spotting before your period
• Shocking PMS, especially irritability and anxiety in the luteal phase
• Breast tenderness, swelling or lumpy b***s
• Fluid retention, bloating, puffiness
• Weight gain around the hips and thighs
• Headaches or migraines around your cycle
• Anxiety, irritability, feeling “wired”
• Mood swings, teary all the time
• Poor sleep, particularly premenstrually

The spleen is an organ that is not spoken so much about, yet I find it so fascinating, especially when we go back to TCM. In traditional Chinese medicine, worry and overthinking are held by the Spleen, the same system that turns your food into energy. When the Spleen is depleted, the mind has less ground to stand on. Thoughts begin to loop, your nerves can hang around and that calmness feels just out of reach.

Physiology tells a similar story. Stress slows our digestion and unsettles blood sugar, and an unsteady gut sends unsteady signals to our brain.

So sometimes you can’t simply just think your way out of anxiousness, you have to nourish your way out alongside that thinking.

Save this for the days your mind won’t settle. 💛

Impacted my career…..

My dad was a huge part of my decision to become a naturopath. He passed away from lung cancer and a brain tumour. He was given 12 months (or close to) to live and was the most positive, optimistic person I knew.

If he could still be here today, I know he would be. The process of being given a death date… is that even a thing? listening to medical jargon, and feeling inferior around medical professionals impacted me deeply….. like who do they think they were….. I’d never heard of a naturopath until my counsellor suggested it. I knew it was for me the moment I found the profession.

I could learn holistic medicine, I could educate patients about their bodies. I could learn medical jargon and share that insight without them feeling inferior (because who wants to feel that feeling, am I right?). I could give them hope and put the reins back in their hands to optimise their health. I could make an impact.

Dad also showed me that life is SO SO sooooo short, he was only 53 when he passed away. Maybe I’m naive, but I feel that nothing in life is that bad, it depends on our perspective. We can choose what we do and how we see life every single day we wake up and take our a breath.

We may not get many years on this earth, but we can absolutely optimise and have fun with the years we have.

Life can be awful and shocking, and we can get handed some really really tough cards, and yes… life is not fair sometimes. But it’s up to us how we choose to live and see each day. I’m not delusional…. Or maybe I am, I know I’ve been through hell and back many times in my life already, but I will always choose to be optimistic until the day I take my last breath.

That’s why I’ll always be your biggest hype woman, your greatest researcher and practitioner who listens and supports you, who will never make you feel inferior, and who may (just maybe) over-explain and educate you a little too much in our sessions and treatment plans.

Because my dad would have done the same.

A very important note to add here….desire, arousal and or**sm shift for all kinds of reasons as you may have read in my previous posts, and these slides won’t be for everyone. If you are asexual and content, that’s is perfectly ok, if your desire has simply changed with a life stage, if medication (like SSRIs or hormonal contraception), pain conditions, thyroid or hormonal issues, depression, or relationship dynamics are at play here, those are very real, valid, and deserve proper care. And if trauma shapes how safe intimacy feels for you, that especially deserves its own trauma-informed support…

This post is for something more specific: the people whose libido, arousal and pleasure have left the building while they’ve been living in chronic stress, running on a nervous system that’s braced, wired and depleted.

In survival mode, desire is one of the first things the body can let go of. That’s rarely because of you as a person or a relationship verdict. It’s your body under a massive load, and it’s exactly what we work on.

After a number of discussions about hormones and our cycle the last couple of weeks, I thought I would do a snippet into the land of our cycle.

Many got “here’s a pad, good luck” at eleven and not much since, yet your hormones shape your energy, your sleep, your mood and your focus… every single day.

So here’s what I want you to know:

Your hormones take orders from your brain, which means your nervous system isn’t separate from your hormonal health, it’s driving it.

Ovulation isn’t just a fertility thing, it’s the only way you make progesterone, your body’s own calming, anti anxiety, deep sleep, mind settling hormone.

If your anxiety spikes the week before your period, if you’re spotting early, if your sleep falls apart premenstrually, that’s a pattern, and can be supported.
