MenAble Australia Inc is a regional Western Australia Men’s Health and Wellbeing not-for-profit organisation. The local community has come together via this group to help address the challenges men and boys so often face in being active, connected, and mentally resilient. Since 2019 the group has been working under the Man Walk Australia entity to help build social capital, combat isolation and improve health outcomes. For the community as a whole but with a particular focus on boys and men in our region. They established the first regional man walk in WA and progressed to outreach these benefits to the wider community. These activities have included community walks for up to 200 participants, free community events on health and wellbeing matters, establishing networks for new dads, documentary screenings, school incursions and activities focussed on combatting family and domestic violence.

Enjoy our special guest Geoff Hutchison on the pertinent topic of "How not to become a grumpy old bu**er". The title of Geoff's first book.

"In ‘How Not to Become a Grumpy Old Bu**er' Geoff wanted to explore how men are coping with a changing world – one which no longer, automatically assumes their entitlement and privilege. Indeed, a world in which they are being asked to share space and spotlight and opportunity with others.
And his conclusion, was that frankly, we blokes often don’t cope very well with life as we get older.
So much of who we are, has been defined by the uniform of male expectation we have long worn. Traditionally, the role of breadwinner, the head of the household, the decision maker.
And when we leave those careers behind and the kids leave home – what defines us then?
And who are we, to our partners?
We may not have given friendship enough consideration, our health may have suffered, and if we’re not careful, we can descend into a pretty negative space of harsh judgment and loneliness.
Geoff sensed that blokes could do with some help and some good advice."

Geoff's Bio:

Geoff Hutchison has enjoyed one of the most diverse careers in Australian media. He has been a talkback current affairs radio host with the ABC – the national broadcaster’s European Correspondent and before that, a senior reporter for ‘The 7.30 Report.’
He has anchored election night specials, reported from war zones – where the fighting usually stopped after he arrived – has faced arrest as a potential White House intruder – trying to take a short cut back to his hotel - and has also investigated the existence of fairies at the bottom of Icelandic gardens.
Before life was that serious, he spent many years as an award-winning reporter/producer for the Nine Network’s ‘Wide World of Sports’ and ‘Sport Sunday’ programmes during which time he competed in the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, swam against the then world 100 metre freestyle champion Alexander Popov and attended a wrestling school in Sacramento California. He also takes immeasurable satisfaction from the fact that Muhammed Ali once rang him up and asked ‘Is that you Hutchison?’
Geoff also spent a year at the famous Groundling Comedy Theatre in Los Angeles where he failed to advance to a second year because, well frankly he thought he was too funny and represented a real threat to other aspiring performers.
And in 1990 he also appeared as an extra in the Robert Altman film The Player.
Not satisfied with that eclectic mix, Geoff released his first book in 2025, the bestseller ‘How Not to Become a Grumpy Old Bu**er.’ An invitation for blokes to lead better lives as they age.
He is currently working on his second book ‘The Last Fish Finger’ – How to be a perfectly adequate and sometimes rather excellent father.
His two adult children have declined an invitation to appear.

The blokes catch up is presented as a collaboration between Mens Talk AU MenAble INC and The Man Walk with the support of Shelter.

The Quiet Cost of “Going It Alone”

Many men grow up hearing the same message: be strong, stay in control, handle problems alone, and don’t ask for help. On the surface, that can sound like resilience. But research suggests that when these ideas go too far, they can quietly damage men’s mental health and relationships.

A large review of studies involving nearly 20,000 people found that some traditional masculine norms, especially extreme self-reliance, emotional control, and attitudes that place power over women, were linked with poorer mental health and a lower likelihood of seeking support.

That matters because stress rarely stays private. When someone feels they must carry every burden alone, partners may feel shut out, friendships can stay surface-level, and small worries can grow into bigger problems. What looks like strength can become isolation.

This does not mean rejecting every idea associated with masculinity. Responsibility, courage, and a strong work ethic can be healthy and valuable. The issue is the belief that men should never need anyone.

A healthier version of strength makes room for honesty. It means checking in with a mate, talking to a partner before things boil over, and seeing therapy, coaching, or support as smart, not weak.

For men, one of the strongest things you can do is let someone know when life is heavy. For partners and friends, the best first step may be simple curiosity: “You seem stressed lately. How are you doing?”

Real strength is not carrying everything alone. It is knowing when to reach out, speak honestly, and stay connected.
