Sober Sister After 14 years of alcoholism I went into liver failure in 2014 at age 27. But most importantly fighting the stigma! 💪

I’m now over 12 years sober and believe in the importance of education and awareness surrounding addiction.

About to go to bed sober for the 4,472nd night in a row! ❤️

I’ve been doing this sobriety thing for over 12 years now, and never once have I woken up thinking, “F**k, I wish I’d got hammered last night.”

Not. Fu***ng. Once.

But I’ve lost count of the mornings I’ve woken up clear-headed, remembered every conversation and had no need to launch a forensic investigation into my own behaviour.

Cravings are dodgy little salespeople. They’ll promise you an hour of relief while conveniently forgetting to mention tomorrow’s hangxiety, regret and apology tour.

They advertise the escape. But hide the fu***ng invoice.

So if tonight’s a hard one, play the tape forward. Past the first drink. Past the bu****it promise that “this time will be different.”

Picture tomorrow morning.

Which version of you do you want to wake up to?

The one piecing together the night like a hungover detective investigating their own stupidity?

Or the one saying, “Yesterday was fu***ng brutal. But I stayed sober anyway!”

Don’t let tonight’s craving steal tomorrow’s “thank f**k I didn’t.” 🙌

🎃 ALCOHOL IS A BIG F*T LIAR.

It turns up at your door dressed as a treat, telling more lies than Pinocchio with a sales target. 🤥

☮️ “I’ll help you relax.”
😄 “You’ll be more confident.”
🥳 “You need me to have fun.”

Then it delivers anxiety, regret, and the next morning is spent checking your messages like you’re gathering evidence for your own prosecution. 😳

Promises a treat. Delivers a trick.

And society practically escorts the lying bastard to your front door.

😫 Hard day? Have a drink.
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Family BBQ? Crack a b**r.
🎂 Birthday party? If you’re not vomiting while your best friend holds your hair back, are you even celebrating properly? 🥴
💻 Work meeting? Apparently that needs w**e too. Although, having sat through meetings that could’ve been an email, I understand the temptation. 😂
🌮 Dinner with friends? Cocktails all round! Because apparently food and people we actually like aren’t enough.

We’ve been taught to question why someone DOESN’T drink before we question why alcohol needs to be involved in literally EVERYTHING.

Marketing has done such a spectacular job that we’ll call drinking a literal poison “treating ourselves” and assume that someone choosing sobriety is “missing out.”

Make. That. Make. Sense. 🤯

And yep, I believed the bu****it for years. Kept buying the promises while living with consequence after consequence.

Over 12 years sober, I can now tell you: you can celebrate, connect, unwind, and build a bloody beautiful life without it.

So when alcohol comes knocking with its costume on and its usual “just one” bu****it, remember what happened the last time you believed it.

You don’t owe the thing that hurt you another chance to prove it’s a treat.

Let the liar knock. You’ve got a life to live and candy to eat 🍭💜

Just a reminder in case you forgot! 😎😎

A little update on why I’ve been quiet lately. 💜

Firstly, I’m sorry I haven’t been posting much or replying to your comments. I wanted to explain what’s happening, because behind the scenes I’m dealing with some pretty major health issues.

It’s a little embarrassing but I’m going to be completely honest with you all as I always am. So here goes….

In early 2023, I was diagnosed with gastroparesis, which means my stomach doesn’t move food through as it should, instead it’s really slow. Since my two spinal surgeries last year, my digestive problems have progressively worsened, and I’m now also struggling with severe bowel dysfunction.

At the moment, I’m only able to go to the bathroom approximately once every two weeks, and that’s after drinking Moviprep—the bowel preparation used before a colonoscopy. Going to the toilet normally just isn’t happening.

On top of this, my bowel and bladder have pr*****ed, meaning they’ve dropped out of their normal positions, making emptying them even more difficult. As you can imagine, it’s physically uncomfortable, painful, mentally exhausting, and a lot to cope with.

My gastroenterologist has referred me to a colorectal surgeon, who I’m seeing next Wednesday. I most likely need several reconstructive surgeries to support my bowel and bladder and put them back into position.

But there’s also a possibility that I’ll need my large bowel completely removed and will be given an ileostomy, where the small bowel is brought through an opening in the abdomen and waste collects in an external bag (like a colostomy bag).

That possibility is understandably very frightening, and I’m really hoping it won’t be necessary. Nothing is confirmed yet, though—I’ll know more about the options after speaking with the surgeon.

In the meantime, please bear with me if I’m quieter than usual. I care about this community so much, but some days I simply don’t have the capacity to show up the way I want to.

I’m still here, still sober, and still fighting. I’m just bloody exhausted from being handed more health problems when what I really need is a break. It just seems to be one thing after another.

Your thoughts, prayers and support right now mean more than you know. I’ll update you after Wednesday’s appointment. Thank you for always being in my corner. I appreciate all of you! 💜
