Friday 9th October is WORLD EGG DAY

Fascinating Facts about Eggs

A young hen is referred to as a pullet. The hen can start laying eggs as early as 16-18 weeks old.

A hen requires 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg, she starts all over again after 30 minutes. A hen can lay up to 300 eggs per year.

An egg will age more in one day at room temperature than in one week in the refrigerator.

White shell eggs are produced by white feathered hens and Brown shell eggs are produced by red and/or brown feathered hens.

You are able to test an egg to see if it is raw or hard boiled by simply giving it a light spin. If it wobbles then the egg is raw and if it spins easily then it is boiled.

You are able to test an egg for freshness by placing the egg in a bowl of water. If the egg sinks to the bottom then it is fresh and if the egg is stale it will float on top of the surface due to the large air cell within the egg.

Eggs are best stored vertically in the egg carton, large end up as to keep the egg yolk centred and protect the egg’s air pockets.

Egg yolks are one of the few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D.

If an egg has been accidently dropped then sprinkle it heavily with salt for easy clean up.

October is Mental Health Month - a chance to pause, check in with ourselves and the people around us, and think about the things that help us feel well. At Lifeline, we are here for everyone, not just in moments of crisis, but in the everyday things that help support mental health.
Throughout October, Lifeline will be sharing stories, ideas and practical ways to support your mental wellbeing. Because looking after ourselves doesn’t have to mean making big changes. Sometimes, it starts with something small - like movement. That’s why this Mental Health Month, we’re focusing on physical activity as a tool that can support our wellbeing.
Different types of movement can support us in different ways, depending on how we’re feeling. A walk can help settle a busy mind, a few minutes of stretching can build momentum when we’re feeling stuck, and moving to music can help lift a flat mood. Joining a social sport or walking group can also create connection and belonging, helping us feel less lonely and isolated. Whatever feels right for you, even a small amount of movement can make a difference.
This October, we hope you’ll take a moment to think about what helps you feel your best β€” and find a way to make a little more space for it.
It could be sport. It could be movement. It could be connection.
Whatever it looks like for you, every step towards looking after your mental health matters.

1 October International Coffee Day 2027
International Coffee Day is a global celebration held every year, honouring one of the world’s most beloved beverages – and the people behind every cup. From farmers and roasters to baristas and everyday coffee lovers, this day highlights the journey of coffee from bean to brew.

Coffee goes back a really long way
Coffee is thought to date back to 800 A.D., where it was discovered by 9th century goat herders. It was said that they noticed their goats eating the plant and afterwards it appeared like they were β€˜dancing’.

Coffee is a fruit
Despite it being called a β€˜bean’, coffee is actually a fruit. The β€˜beans’ grow on a bush and are found in the centre of a berry, known as a coffee cherry.

Beethoven loved coffee
He was apparently quite obsessive about it, using precisely 60 beans per cup and would spend time counting out every bean.

Brazil grows the most coffee in the world
Brazil is the number one coffee producer, followed by Vietnam and Colombia.

Finland consumes the most coffee in the world
Finland drinks the most coffee! On average they drink 12kg per person, per year which works out to an impressive 1,680 cups on average each a year.

Coffee wasn’t always enjoyed with breakfast
Despite coffee being known as one of the most popular drinks to have with breakfast , prior to the 18th century, b**r was actually enjoyed with the first meal of the day!

Decaf doesn’t mean no caffeine
For a coffee to be classed as decaf, it needs to have less than 0.3% caffeine.

The decaffeination process helps to create our favourite soft drinks
Once caffeine has been removed (for decaf coffee ), the caffeine will usually be sold to soft drink or pharmaceutical companies.

Coffee was once banned
It was banned in Sweeden for a while in 1746, along with anything related to it – including cups and saucers, because it was thought to stimulate radical thinking.

The most expensive coffee in the world costs $600 per pound
Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world, and as of 2019, it cost $600 per pound. Native to Indonesia, the coffee is roasted after being eaten, digested and expelled by the Palm Civet.

The largest cup of coffee in the world was over 26,000 litres
The largest cup of coffee ever made was 26,939.22 litres. The brew made in Mexico, on 10 December 2022, took 300 kg of coffee and currently holds the Guinness World Record.

Australians love coffee
Australia drinks around 15.4 cups of coffee on average per week.
