Our Accredited Practising Dietitian Caitlin recently presented on behalf of Altaira Allied Health at the South Australia Police Health and Wellbeing Conference, joined on the day by our Head of Allied Health, Michael. In her session, "GLP-1 Medications: Maintaining Health, Muscle and Operational Readiness," Caitlin unpacked the clinical and practical realities of these medications specifically for frontline and tactical environments.
With the rapid rise of GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Mounjaro, understanding how these treatments intersect with high-demand, physical roles has never been more critical.
Key takeaways from Caitlin’s session included:
- How GLP-1s Work: Understanding their role in weight management, metabolic health, benefits, and common side effects.
- Navigating Shift Work: Practical strategies for managing suppressed appetite, meal timing, hydration, energy levels, and gastrointestinal symptoms across rotating rosters.
- Protecting Muscle & Strength: Addressing the risks of rapid weight loss on lean muscle mass and physical performance, and how to combat it through targeted protein intake and resistance training.
- Operational Readiness: Recognising the direct implications for frontline policing duties, including physical fitness, recovery, fatigue management, and readiness for work.
- Sustainable Outcomes: Why ongoing monitoring of body composition and overall health, not just the number on the scale, is essential for safe, long-term success.
Through our specialised Allied Health and Occupational Health/WHS services, we partner closely with emergency services organisations to keep South Australia’s frontline personnel healthy, strong, and operationally ready.
Fantastic work to Caitlin for delivering such a timely, evidence-based session, and to Michael and Caitlin for representing the team so well!
