Want to try a little experiment with your own mind?
It takes about 30 seconds.
Find a quiet moment and allow yourself to pause.
Now, gently bring your attention to your breathing.
Feel the air entering your body.
Feel it leaving.
Notice the gentle rise and fall of your chest or belly.
Don't try to control your breath. Just be aware of it.
Stay with this simple experience for a few moments.
Now, notice something.
As your attention rests completely on your breathing, the stream of thoughts may suddenly become quiet.
For a moment, there may be no thoughts at all.
But here's the interesting part:
You are not falling asleep. You are not drifting into a dream.
You are fully awake.
You can still feel your breath, hear the sounds around you, and be aware of everything happening in this moment.
There is no need to think about the present moment.
You are simply experiencing it.
Eckhart Tolle explains that this is what happens when we rise above thinking rather than fall below it.
You are no longer caught in the endless activity of your mind. You are simply aware.
Try this whenever you feel overwhelmed by thoughts, worries, or the demands of everyday life.
Sometimes, all it takes to return to the present moment is one conscious breath.
