I don’t know about you, but if I were going to take diabetes advice I would be more likely to take it from someone who is living with diabetes themselves. At the age of 10, my mum and I went to the doctor following me having a cold for a week. On the spot my doctor diagnosed me with type 1 diabetes and told us to go straight to the hospital. The only other things I remember her saying was that I was likely to have a limb amputated one day, that I could go blind and that it would be difficult for me to have children. My mum was the most affected by this diagnosis; all I heard and was terrified about was that you have to stay in hospital, I just wanted to go home! My mum threw herself into finding out everything she could about type 1 diabetes so that she could take the best care of me and teach me the right things. The doctor continued to be of no help, she didn’t offer any useful books to read and didn’t really offer any valuable information. I did meet a wonderful Endocrinologist at the time who helped us through this hard transition and a couple of fantastic nurses but the hospital stay was purely to learn how to do my own injections, this took one week; my doctor told me I could not leave the hospital until I was doing my own injections. Ever since I was a child I have tested my blood glucose levels independently and have done insulin injections first with needles and vials and then with insulin pens. I made the difficult decision to convert to an insulin pump in 2012 when I commenced work as a full time Registered Nurse and I have never looked back. In my life I have lanced my fingers 75,000+ times, I have injected my arms, legs and abdomen more than 30,000 times and I have changed my insulin infusion set more than 512 times. It is due to this doctor’s compassionless and apathetic treatment of me that I am thankful for her. Without her, I would not have been driven to make a diagnosis of diabetes a better experience for others. This doctor motivated me to become a Diabetes Educator; to be an empathetic Diabetes Educator who has sat in the same chair being diagnosed with diabetes, to be a Diabetes Educator who understands exactly what it feels like when you are told you have to inject yourself with insulin every day for the rest of your life, to be someone who could answer questions in a way people understood, to be somebody who could give you useful resources to help you understand in your own time and to understand that you may have questions at odd times of the day, to be a Diabetes Educator who understands that you think about everything in a day in relation to your diabetes and how it will be affected, a Diabetes Educator who understands that you think about many things in the future and how they will be affected by your diabetes. That is who I am today.

🌴 Bali with two boys, friends and Type 1 Diabetes! β˜€οΈπŸ’™

10 days in Bali with my boys and friends! What an adventure! Travelling with two boys certainly has its challenges, but surprisingly, Type 1 Diabetes wasn't one of them!

🍽️ The biggest challenge? FOOD! πŸ˜‚

Feeding two boys is a full-time job! Hotels and resorts were brilliant, but our Airbnb? Stressful! No room service, no reception to call, just Mum hunting down food while the boys stayed behind because apparently finding dinner is boring. πŸ™„

✈️ Airport security? Diabetes gadgets were a breeze! Getting two kids through those automated scanners? Much harder!

πŸ’™ The diabetes wins!

My glucose levels were AMAZING! All that walking, swimming and fewer snacks meant 92% time in range and above for the entire holiday!

I packed mountains of supplies and came home with more than half!

The Simplera CGMs were fantastic. Stickier, less fiddly and brilliant in the Bali heat. Daily swimming did cause some tape issues, but nothing we couldn't manage.

And my favourite win?

ONE infusion set and insulin change in 10 DAYS! πŸ™Œ Extended infusion sets for the WIN!

🌺 A little unexpected discovery…

I absolutely fell in love with Balinese culture and spirituality. The daily offerings, gratitude, beautiful traditions and sense of peace really resonated with me.

I came home with some beautiful bracelets that are now part of my everyday wear. Little reminders of the culture, connection and peace I hope to bring into our lives back home. ❀️

🌴 Would I do it again?

Absolutely! Was it always relaxing? Nope! But we did it. We explored, laughed, swam, got frustrated and made beautiful memories with friends.

And the funny thing? Managing Type 1 Diabetes was probably the easiest part! πŸ˜‚

I like to take my pump on a cereal journey every once in a while. Its only fair to test it occasionally when things are testing us so damn frequently! This mornings four Wheaton ride went just beautifully if you ask me. **everyone is different in diabetes, body and pump settings so I cant gaurentee this is the case for you but this is something the pump can do.

I bolussed a very pathetic 30g of carb when the 4 Wheatbix, milk and sugar that I had was most definitely not that. But this pump worked his magic.

It got cereal right, the rest of the day went a bit haywire and we are only 81% but for an active weekend chasing two boys ill choose to take that as a major win!

Whats your win of Saturday? Diabetes or non diabetes related, im not fussed!?

Diabetes stuff on, pool has somehow managed to get to 30 degrees, thank you solar heating!! Its freezing outside but the pool is warmer, post school seems like a perfect time for a mini pool party! Thanks for joining us friends! Summer pool season is in full swing and im not sad about it!

Pump, and cgm join me in the pool everytime. The pump is ipx8 water rated, it is waterproof. Not all insulin pumps are water proof but believe it or not most are, except for the tslim. If everyone else can come in the water with their pancreas, why cant I? Do you go in the water with yours?

*if your pump has cracks it is no longer gaurenteed as waterproof. If still in warrenty this can be replaced through the pump company. If it has a crack or if you take it in the pool and have problems with its function call the company and they will replace it. If its out of warrenty, 4 years since you had it paid for through private health insurance, then keep your pump out of water and safe.

**this is not medical advice, just musings from my own experience and training.

Look at all the hard work this beautiful pump has been doing for me today! For anyone not using a MiniMed Australia 780G, the pink is the basal insulin which adjusts every 5 minutes, the blue bottles up the top are bolus doses (my dinner), the blue lines are all the Automatic corrections this beautiful pump has delivered to me to prevent me from going or staying high. The areas of black are where the pump is delivering no insulin at all to prevent a low or dropping BG. The 780G can offer a auto bg correction as soon as your bg goes above 6.7 (depending on some other factors, mostly the basal being at its max). It can then offer an auto correction every 5 minutes and up to 12 in an hour. It doesnt just stop after 1.

Also kept me safe with the temp target on when I took my two boys and one of their friends up into the mountains for a hike with their bikes for an hour and a bit. Climbed some bits, rode bikes down some dirt tracks. So nice to be out but most importantly feeling safe. I walked, I did some running, and my bg stayed around 5.6 while my pump was delivering no insulin, and it hadnt been delivering insulin for the hour and a half prior.

A busy day of work, a mountain adventure, a hard dinner with elements of stress and some fun. Mr Pump has my back! πŸ‘Œ thanks MiniMed Australia

A stripped supply delivery! The best! The fact that I dont need to step into a chemist once a month to order my supplies then wait for a call to tell me my stuff has arrived then go back to pick it up means the world to me! Keeping track of this sort of stuff is not in any way a part of my brain capacity right now. Woth STRIPPED SUPPLY I have a subscription that I pay for monthly and I get the supplies I need delivered once every two months. Arrives right to my door, never goes to the post office. Its the best!! Thanks Ash and all the wonderful pharmacists and people working behind the Insta of Stripped Supply! Anything that makes t1d life easier is a gift!

I have some additional items in my order this week compared to my normal subscription but I just easily adjusted my order for this week when I got my notification that my order was coming out soon.
