Jodi Cowan A Counsellor, Kinesiologist and Aromatherapist: bringing 3 powerful modalities together to support deep, lasting transformation as we walk this path together.

Since 2017, I’ve assisted people to identify, understand and release the barriers that hold them back from living their best life. Life's too short to be unhappy, unsure, or unfulfilled. I want to support you to live your life freely and easily by sharing my skills and training in counselling, kinesiology, aromatherapy, coaching and neuro linguistic programming to help you learn and develop better ways to handle the issues that are standing in the way of your goals.

You may have seen a label on some of my posts saying they’re AI generated.

I want to be transparent. I’m responsible for all of my content, and it’s built on my own experience and ideas.

I use Claude to help me with drafting and editing my writing, and Canva for my graphics and imagery, including AI design features like expanding images and changing colours. I’m also supported by a designer who helps bring many of my graphics to life.

Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up a role in our relationships:

πŸ”Ή The fixer
πŸ”Ή The peacekeeper
πŸ”Ή The strong one
πŸ”Ή The one who never needs anything

Roles can start out as ways of coping, or as expectations we absorbed from family, culture or the people around us. Over time, they can leave us feeling unseen, tired, or unsure who we are outside of them.

Here's a gentle question to sit with: "Which role am I playing right now, and did I choose it?"

Relationships often run on unspoken scripts about who should do what, who should lead, who should give more, and who should cope quietly.

When we never talk about the script, we can end up frustrated with each other for not following rules that neither of us agreed to.

Try opening a conversation with:
"What did you learn about how relationships are supposed to work? Let's talk about what works for us."

It can turn blame into curiosity, and expectation into partnership ✨

There was a time in my own life when everything felt too heavy to carry.

Not because I wasn't coping. From the outside, I probably looked fine. But on the inside, it felt like I was holding so much that I couldn't sort one thing from the next.

What I needed most wasn't advice or a quick fix. I needed somewhere safe to put it all down. To say it out loud, messy and out of order, without worrying how it sounded, whether I was "too much", or what the other person might think.

That space changed something for me. Just being heard, without judgement, made the load feel lighter. It helped me understand what I was actually feeling, and slowly, what I needed next.

That's a big part of why I became a counsellor. I wanted to offer that same kind of space to others.

Here's what I've come to believe:
- You don't have to have it all figured out before you reach out.
- You don't have to start at the beginning, or in the "right" order.
- You don't have to wait until things are unbearable.
- Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply somewhere safe to say it all.

If life feels heavy right now, please know you don't have to carry it alone.

Today, you might try one thing: take a breath before you respond. Pause. Breathe. Then respond.

A boundary isn't a wall or a punishment. It's simply a clear, kind message about what you need.

Instead of: "You always take advantage of me."
Try: "I'm not able to take that on this week, but I can help with X."

Instead of: Saying yes, then quietly resenting it
Try: "Let me think about it and get back to you."

Clear boundaries build respect. They also make it easier for others to know how to love and work with you.

Setting boundaries can feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you're used to keeping the peace. That discomfort doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It often means you're doing something new.

What's one boundary you'd like to feel more confident setting?

Grab a pen and a cuppa, and give yourself ten quiet minutes with one or two of these:

πŸ“ The last time I felt truly listened to, what was the other person doing?

πŸ“ What do I most want the people close to me to understand, and have I ever said it in plain words?

πŸ“ When I feel unheard, what do I tend to do next? Go quiet, explain more, or change the subject?

πŸ“ If I could say one sentence without worrying how it lands, what would it be?

There are no right answers here, and this is just for you. Write messily, skip the ones that don't fit, and come back to them another day πŸ’›

Many of us grew up hearing messages like:

"Don't make a fuss."

"Be strong."

"Keep it to yourself."

"Men don't talk about feelings."

"Good mothers put themselves last."

These beliefs can make it hard to ask for support, express emotion, or admit we're struggling. And they often show up in our relationships as silence, resentment or distance.

Needing support is not weakness. Feeling deeply is not a flaw. Both are part of being human. Next time you notice one of these old messages, try asking: "Whose voice is this, and does it still fit me?"
