🌸 WORLD MENOPAUSE DAY | 18 OCTOBER

πŸ’œ Menopause is a part of life. Understanding it should be too.

Whether you're experiencing hormonal changes yourself, supporting someone who is, or simply wanting to learn more, let's talk about perimenopause and menopause.

🌿 Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. Hormonal changes can cause symptoms years before periods stop.

🌸 Menopause is reached after 12 consecutive months without a period, when there is no other cause.

Symptoms vary from person to person and may include:
πŸ”₯ Hot flushes and night sweats
😴 Sleep difficulties and fatigue
🧠 Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
πŸ’œ Anxiety or mood changes
🦴 Joint aches and changes to bladder or vaginal health

You don't have to simply put up with symptoms that affect your quality of life.

Treatment and management options are available, and your GP can help you understand what's happening and explore the support that's right for you.

A NEW NATIONAL CAMPAIGN IS HELPING CHANGE THE CONVERSATION

The Australian Government has launched a national campaign to raise awareness of perimenopause and menopause, helping Australians better understand the symptoms, explore treatment options and know where to turn for support.

It’s an important step towards better awareness, more informed conversations and helping people feel confident seeking care.

πŸ”— Explore the campaign and access information:
https://www.health.gov.au/perimenopause

At Acacia Country Practice, we believe everyone deserves to feel heard, informed and supported at every stage of life.

Let's make menopause a more comfortable conversation. πŸ’œ

πŸ’™ Caring for those who care for others

We’re pleased to welcome Dr John Douyere back to Charleville this October.

Through GPs4RuralDocs, Dr John provides dedicated, confidential and independent GP care specifically for rural healthcare practitioners β€” recognising that looking after everyone else can sometimes make it difficult to prioritise your own health.

With extensive experience in rural practice and doctor-to-doctor care, Dr John understands the realities of working in a rural community and the importance of having a safe, independent space to focus on your own health and wellbeing.

πŸ“ Acacia Country Practice, Charleville
πŸ“… Tuesday 27 October β€” 3.00pm–6.00pm
πŸ“… Wednesday 28 October β€” 7.00am–12.00pm

Appointments are available now.

If you’re a GP, nurse, allied health professional or other healthcare practitioner working in our rural community, this is a reminder that your health matters too.

Because caring for the community also means caring for the people who care for it. πŸ’™

πŸŽ€ TITILLATING? PERHAPS. IMPORTANT? ABSOLUTELY.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month β€” and we’re taking the opportunity to remind you that checking your breast health matters.

πŸ’— Know what’s normal for you.
πŸ’— Notice a change.
πŸ’— Get it checked.

If you notice a new lump, change in the size or shape of your breast, changes to the ni**le or skin, or unusual discharge, make an appointment with your GP. Don’t wait for your next routine screening appointment.

If you’re due for a breast screen, BreastScreen Queensland (www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au) provides free screening for eligible women aged 40 and over. Women aged 50–74 are encouraged to have a breast screen every two years.

At Acacia Country Practice, our GPs can assess breast concerns, talk with you about screening and arrange referrals or further investigations when needed.

And remember β€” you don’t need a family history of breast cancer to take breast health seriously.

πŸŽ€ Breast believe it: checking matters.

For information about breast screening or to find out if you’re eligible, visit BreastScreen Queensland or call 13 20 50.

πŸ’™ Big Blue Table | Saturday 24 October

Small conversations can make a big difference. πŸ’™

This October, our community comes together for Big Blue Table β€” a morning of coffee, conversation, connection and a little bit of blue!

Join in at The Milk Bar from 8am–10am on Saturday 24 October. Everyone is welcome.

πŸ’™ Wear blue
🧁 Enjoy some delicious blue cupcakes
β˜• Grab a coffee and have a chat
🎟️ Take a chance in the raffle
πŸ’¬ Most importantly β€” connect with someone

Mental health can be a difficult conversation to start, but sometimes it begins with something as simple as β€œHow are you going?”

Big Blue Table is about creating space for those conversations, reminding each other that we don't have to navigate life alone, and building a community where people feel connected, supported and like they belong.

All funds raised will be donated to Beyond Blue’s Big Blue Table to support mental health and wellbeing.

Together, we can make a difference β€” one conversation at a time. πŸ’™

πŸ‘‹ Meet the Team β€” Carmen

You might recognise me from around ACP, although these days you’ll usually find me working from my home office in Toowoomba. From there, I’m still very much involved in the things that keep ACP connected with its community.

I was born in Charleville, but my family moved away when I was a few years old. Despite growing up elsewhere, I always felt a strong connection to Charleville β€” and eventually, there was a pull to come 'home'.

In 2023, I returned to Charleville and loved being back. It had always held such a special place in my heart.

Six months ago, my husband’s work took us to Toowoomba, so I packed up once again. While I may no longer be based in Charleville, I’m incredibly grateful that my role with ACP means I can continue to be part of the community. I visit whenever I can, and I’m still very much connected from afar.

I first joined ACP in a role focused on social media content creation capacity, before stepping into Acting Practice Manager while Lauren was on maternity leave. These days, I’m proudly the ACP Community Engagement Officer, drawing on my background in health promotion.

So, what does that actually mean?

A little bit of everything! From the in-house noticeboard and social media to community events, sponsorships, health campaigns and local partnerships, I like to keep my finger on the pulse (pardon the pun πŸ˜‰) of what’s happening in our community.

I’m passionate about improving health inequalities, breaking down barriers to accessing healthcare and, above all, creating genuine connections between people, health and community.

And perhaps that passion comes from the fact that to me, home is a feeling.

Before I left Charleville, I self-published a book dedicated to the town. It was my own little way of putting into words what this place has meant to me β€” and my work with ACP is another way of staying connected to it.

I may work from Toowoomba now, but Charleville will always be home β€” and I’m pretty lucky that my role lets me keep a little piece of it close, even from quite a few hours down the road. πŸ’™

🎬 Just a Farmer β€” Charleville

A film. A conversation. A chance to come together. πŸ’š

As part of Queensland Mental Health Week, the South West community is invited to a free screening of the award-winning Australian film Just a Farmer.

Set against the realities of farming life, the film explores family, resilience, community and the challenges that can sometimes sit beneath the surface.

And it’s more than just a movie night β€” there’ll be real South West stories, an expert panel discussion and plenty of opportunities to connect, with a free BBQ dinner provided.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ Whether you’re a farmer, part of a farming family, or simply part of our rural community, everyone is welcome.

πŸ“… Friday 9 October 2026
πŸ“ Charleville Town Hall, Wills Street
πŸ•• 6:00pm–10:00pm
πŸ” Free BBQ from 5:30pm
🎟️ Free event β€” bookings essential

There’s also free activities for kids, so bring the family along.

Sometimes the most important conversations start simply by showing up, sitting together and watching a story that feels familiar.

Let’s start the conversation. πŸ’š

✈️ Travelling for specialist care? You may be eligible for help with the cost.

If you need to travel outside our local area for specialist medical treatment, you may be eligible for assistance through Queensland’s Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS).

The scheme can provide subsidies towards travel, accommodation and, where approved, an es**rt for eligible patients.

And if the paperwork feels a little overwhelming, you don’t have to work it all out on your own. πŸ’š

Our friendly team at the ACP front counter can help you with the forms we have available, answer questions about the paperwork and point you in the right direction.

πŸ‘‰ If you think you may be eligible, ask our team or speak with your GP before you travel. Applications should be submitted as early as possible to allow time for processing and travel arrangements.

For eligibility and more information, visit the Queensland Government's Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme information page www.qld.gov.au/health/services/travel/subsidies/about

Because getting the care you need shouldn't be made harder by the distance you have to travel. πŸ’š
