I hear this quite often in practice: “I suppose it’s just because I’m getting older.”

Sometimes age is part of the picture. Our bodies change as we get older and it is completely normal for the way we move and recover to change too. But age doesn’t always explain why something has suddenly started feeling different.

A stiff neck. A sore knee on the stairs. Finding it harder to get comfortable after sitting. Losing some movement you used to have. There can be many things contributing to these changes and simply putting them down to age can mean we miss the opportunity to understand what is actually going on.

After 15 years in practice I’ve learnt that it is always worth looking at the whole picture rather than assuming there is one simple explanation.

Getting older is part of life. It doesn’t mean you have to stop asking questions about your health or accept every change without understanding it.

If something has changed and you’re not sure whether it is simply part of getting older or something worth looking into you can book a complimentary 15 minute consultation through the link in our bio.

One of the things I’ve learnt over the years is that an old injury can sometimes tell me more about how someone is moving today than they realise.

You may have injured your ankle playing sport years ago or hurt your back lifting something and feel like it has completely settled now. You’re back doing everything you normally do and you probably don’t think about that injury anymore.

What can sometimes stay with us though is the way we moved while we were recovering. We might have put more weight through the other side or avoided certain movements because they didn’t feel comfortable.

Those changes can become so familiar that we stop noticing them.

This doesn’t mean an old injury is responsible for every new ache or that something is necessarily wrong. It is simply one part of your history that I want to understand when I’m looking at the bigger picture.

That’s why when I’m assessing someone I want to know not only what is bothering them now but also what their body has been through before. Sometimes those details help explain changes in the way they move today.

If you have an old injury and you’ve noticed a change in the way you move or feel I’d be happy to have a conversation about it. You can book a complimentary 15 minute consultation through the link in our bio.

The part of my work I treasure most is the relationships I build with the people I care for.

Over time I get to know more about them than what brings them into the clinic.

I hear about their families their work and the little things happening in their lives.

I love being able to care for people over time and understand what matters to them. Those relationships make this work so meaningful to me.

Thank you to all the families who trust me with their care. It means a lot to be part of your journey.

Sometimes the questions I ask during an appointment might seem like they have very little to do with where you’re feeling discomfort. But there’s a reason I’m interested in these things.

I want to understand what life looks like for you outside of the appointment. What you normally do during the day. What you enjoy doing. What you’ve had to change or avoid and whether there are things you would like to get back to.

For some people that might mean getting back to a sport they love. For someone else it might be being able to get through a full day at work or keeping up with their children without having to think about their body quite so much.

These conversations give me a better understanding of what has changed for you and what you would like to be able to do.

So when I ask questions that seem unrelated to where you’re feeling discomfort there is usually a reason behind them. I’m trying to understand the person in front of me and the things that are important to them rather than looking at one part of the body in isolation.

If you’d like to have a conversation about what you’re experiencing and understand whether an assessment is appropriate for you you can book a call with us through the link in our bio.

Before we begin treatment there are a few things I want to understand first because no two people present in exactly the same way.

We’ll start by talking through your health history and what has brought you in.

I want to understand what you’ve noticed and how things have been for you rather than simply focusing on the area where you may be experiencing discomfort.

From there I’ll perform a thorough assessment which can include chiropractic neurological and orthopaedic testing.

These different parts of the assessment give me information that I can put together with what you’ve told me.

I’m looking at the whole picture and considering what the findings mean in the context of you and your individual situation.

Once we’ve completed the assessment we’ll talk through what I’ve found and what it means.

We can then discuss whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you and what the next step might look like.

I think it’s important that you understand what we’ve found and why I’m making any recommendations before we begin.

If you’ve been wondering whether an assessment is right for you and would like to understand what’s involved you can book a call with us through the link in our bio.

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is how easy it is to overlook the small changes in our bodies when life is busy.

A little stiffness in the morning. Finding yourself avoiding a particular movement. Turning your whole body instead of your neck. Feeling uncomfortable after sitting for a while.

None of these things automatically mean there is a bigger problem and they may not seem important enough to do anything about. The difficulty is that we can gradually start adapting around these changes without even realising it.

We change the way we move. We stop doing certain things. We find a position that feels more comfortable and stick with it. Before long something that once felt unusual can start to feel completely normal.

I don’t think we need to worry about every little ache or sensation we notice. I do think it is worth paying attention when something has changed and stays changed.

Sometimes understanding what is contributing to that change can help you make better decisions about your health before it starts having a bigger impact on the things you enjoy doing.

If you’ve noticed a change in the way your body feels or moves and you’re not sure what to make of it you can book a complimentary 15-minute consultation through the link in our bio.

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is that progress is not always as obvious as we expect it to be.

When someone first comes into the clinic there can be a lot of thought around how their body is feeling. They might be paying attention to certain movements or wondering how they will manage different parts of their day. Sometimes that awareness is useful because it tells us something has changed. Other times it can become tiring when you feel like you are constantly thinking about what your body is going to do next.

What I really love seeing is when that starts to fade into the background.

Not because everything suddenly becomes perfect but because the person has stopped giving so much attention to something that used to occupy their mind.

They make plans without wondering how their body will cope. They get on with their day without checking in with themselves every few minutes. They stop making every decision around whether something might feel uncomfortable.

Those moments are easy to miss because there is often no big announcement that things have changed. You might only realise it when you look back and notice that something which once took up a lot of your attention simply doesn’t anymore.

After 15 years in practice I think I’ve learnt to appreciate those quieter signs of progress just as much as the obvious ones.

Sometimes a little win is simply having one less thing to think about.

I’ve had quite a few conversations with clients where stress and sleep come up without us initially talking about either of them.

Someone might come in feeling tight through their neck and shoulders or noticing that they’re clenching their jaw more than usual. As we talk a little more about what has been happening in their life they might mention that work has been particularly busy or that they haven’t been sleeping well for the past few weeks.

It doesn’t mean stress or poor sleep is the cause of what they’re experiencing. There can be a number of things involved. But they are useful pieces of information because our physical health doesn’t exist separately from the rest of our lives.

I think this is something we can easily forget when life gets busy. We focus on the area that feels uncomfortable without thinking about what else might have changed at the same time.

Sometimes looking at the bigger picture gives us a much better understanding of what’s going on.

If you’ve noticed changes in your sleep or how your body has been feeling lately and you’d like to talk it through you can book a call with us through the link in our bio.
