We have some very exciting news over at KBW!

We have the wonderful Melissa - Naturopath (BHSc) joining our team. Dani & I are so excited to be working alongside Mel, who will be seeing clients at the clinic and online from 14th November onwards.

Mel has 18 years experience as a registered nurse, is a Naturopath & has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Human Nutrition and a Graduate Certificate in Human Nutrition.

Her experience nursing and being a Mum of 2 gorgeous little ones has greatly impacted her practice - making her passionate about supporting busy mums, meeting them where they're at & understanding how tricky it can be to make time for yourself.

Mel enjoys working with the whole family, and has a special interest in:
🌻 Children's health including digestive issues, allergies, skin conditions, sleep issues, and feeding challenges.
🌻 Women's health including irregular cycles, PCOS and endometriosis through to perimenopause and menopause
🌻 Supporting gut health
🌻 Supporting clients nervous system & stress response

We'll be sharing more about Mel over the coming weeks. You can read about her on our website, or book in a free discovery call to have a no obligation chat with her to see how she can support you or your kids!

So Katie asked me to share something good from my most recent holiday. Something about the food, or perhaps the rest. 🍽️

Lovelies, I’m here to tell you the food wasn’t amazing (although there were a few epic highlights that I’ve shared in my photos) and I got no rest. 😅

4 weeks gallivanting around the UK at breakneck speed and I came home absolutely wrecked.

Wrong kind of holiday for me, in hindsight.

As a perimenopausal woman who works with perimenopausal women every day, I should have known better.

Our bodies need more recovery, not less. Poor sleep, a revved-up nervous system that needs a bit of support, and a packed itinerary are absolutely a recipe for burnout, and I walked right into it.

So what I did learn is that I need to prioritise rest when I’m home.

For me, right now, that looks like:

🌿 Slower mornings (also trying to fix this jet lag)

🌿 Being consistent with my supplements, especially the ones at night that help me sleep. Sleep in perimenopause has been a struggle

🌿 One day a week in the diary with no work. None.

🌿 A proper protein and fibre breakfast so I front-load my day and have the mood and capacity to get through it

Swipe for the photos ➡️

Some are lovely. Some I look very tired in. 😴

And just like that, my fourth trimester is over 😱 my baby is 12 weeks old!

While postpartum is forever, this very immediate stage of postpartum is coming to a close.

I thought I'd share some things I've been feeling grateful for over this past 12 weeks 🩷

🦋 My gorgeous girl - of course!!
🦋 The amazing support we have had - meals and meal vouchers from loved ones, baby clothes and items, family sitting in the back of the car while bub has been going through a phase of not liking the car 😝, meeting the lovely women at mother's group who are going through this with me, having family take the time to just be with me and bub 🩷
🦋 My partner for looking after me - the extent to which I needed him post c-section I could never have imagined. He's seen me at my most vulnerable and been there with me through everything. We love each other more for it.
🦋 Our gorgeous midwives who have gotten us through so much
🦋 My lovely friends who have had their babies before me, and who have been a lovely support
🦋 My body - I can look at my body with so much love and gratitude - how amazing that I have grown this little lady & continue to feed her
🦋 My knowledge of postpartum - understanding what's happening in my body and why is a game changer
🦋 The sunshine for coming out and bringing so much joy to our days
🦋 Mannix 🐶 for adjusting well to being a big brother!

Recovery from my birth is taking longer than I expected.

It's funny because I have worked in the postpartum space for years, and yet the focus of our consults isn't so much on the way recovery actually feels. Instead we are focusing on nutrition, gut health, energy, mood, sleep quality, milk, etc.

I have found recovering from a c-section physically hard and slow. It's major abdominal surgery - of course, it makes sense that it takes time.

With the progression of my pregnancy, I went from planning a homebirth to being admitted to hospital at 37 and a half weeks pregnant, knowing that we'd be having a c-section as close to 38 weeks as possible. I was very shocked and not really prepared for a c-section, so I asked the midwives 1000 questions. They were so helpful, and I really found that few days in hospital exactly what I needed to prepare for my birth experience.

The midwives told me that as long as I took paracetamol and ibuprofen as often as they suggested I'd be fine. Just get up and walk around 4-6hrs after my baby's birth, and I'd be fine. I really didn't find this to be true. It bloody hurt! Even with all of the paracetamol, ibuprofen and a couple of much stronger medications available.

I planned to follow the 5-5-5 postpartum rule, and did quite well with this. I'd say I spent closer to 3 weeks mostly in/around the bed, with short walks here and there. I am so grateful that I did this (I had heaps of visitors though - they would just come and sit with me in my bedroom).

At 2-3 weeks things were a lot more manageable. I had imagined that by now I would feel so much better.

I'm almost 11 weeks postpartum now, almost at the end of my fourth trimester. I am still bleeding (this is not normal! I've had it looked into - please do the same if you also experience bleeding past 6 weeks!). My scar occasionally hurts. The feeling has just started to come back in my tummy, and this has meant over the past week or two I can feel the stitches deep in my belly. My bladder and bowels have been affected. They're slowly improving. If I walk for too long my bleeding increases and my back hurts.

Continued in the comments.

Pregnancy care 🤰🏼

I have been meaning to make this post literally since announcing my pregnancy 😂

During my pregnancy I chose to access Private Midwifery care, and I loved it - I couldn't recommend this option highly enough.

Our plan was to have a homebirth, which didn't end up being our reality. I worried before engaging with a private midwife that I would feel it was a "waste" if I didn't end up having my baby at home and I can now say that couldn't be further from the truth.

Sam from Samantha Gaffney and Hattie from Hattie Nairn | Private Midwife were our two midwives who supported us through pregnancy, birth and postpartum. They made my partner and I feel so supported, especially when things started to go in a different direction from what we wanted.

Sam visited us at home for appointments from when I was about 13 weeks pregnant through to 6 weeks postpartum. I would see Hattie in her clinic from about 22 weeks (I think?), and then she attended our 36 week birth planning appointment (pictured), our birth, and our home postpartum. We also attended Calmbirth with Hattie (highly recommend!!)

I'm so grateful for the care I received in pregnancy and postpartum. Having the continuity of these two wonderful women is one of the highlights of my pregnancy. I miss them both already!!

Modern cloth nappies (MCN)

I've been really enjoying using MCN!

In the first four weeks of having our baby we spent around $200 on organic disposable nappies. We had always planned on using MCN, but bub was a bit too small, and I needed a chance to recover from birthing her before starting our daily washing routine.

An extra $200 a month on nappies felt absolutely ridiculous! And, it's so much extra waste going to landfill.

We've been using MCN since bub was about 5 weeks, and we have been using the one size pocket nappies from a variety of brands. They were still a little bit big for her at 5 weeks, but she grew into them pretty quickly (she was a big baby - if you were having a smaller baby it would be worth buying the newborn nappies). I actually find the routine quiet easy now I'm in it, and we get a lot less leaks now. Bub has never had bad nappy rash, either!

Things I've found helpful:
🌻 Going easy on myself in the beginning - I did a combination of disposables when we were out and cloth nappies at home until I was more confident
🌻 We still have a packet of disposables at home and a few in the baby bag - they come in handy occasionally if the washing isn't dry, or if we go through more nappies than expected when out
🌻 Marketplace - I have saved so much money getting most of these second hand (plus a few gifted at our baby shower and extra inserts from a lovely mama when I was starting out)
🌻 Trying different brands - one of the best things about getting so many second hand nappies is I've tried lots of different brands. I know what nappies fit my baby best and what inserts I like best now. For us, Designer Bums - Reusable Cloth Nappies & Parenting Essentials have been the best fit with the least leaks
🌻 Getting a 'Clean Cloth Nappy' membership for $5.50 a month - all my questions on washing answered as well as recommendations on proper detergents to use. Having the right laundry detergent and the right washing methods is so important for avoiding ammonia build up and a sore bottom for baby

Added benefit? MCN are meant to be better for toilet training as the baby can feel when they're wet.

I know that MCN aren't for everyone, but definitely worth considering trying 🤱🏼

Screentime postpartum has been hard to avoid 😝

It's so easy to scroll on my phone while breastfeeding or cuddling my sleepy babe. It actually took me quite a few weeks to build up the confidence and the focus to read after having my baby. My brain felt really foggy and I was tired. I'm not sure what the confidence thing was about - I'm sure I've always been able to read one handed 😂

I've been making a conscious effort to not spend too long on my phone - reading a book fills my cup so much more! So does putting away the washing, filling the dishwasher, going for a walk or chatting to someone on the phone. So does having a quiet rest and enjoying the snuggles while my baby rests. She will only be so little for such a short time.

I'm curious what other things are you doing while breastfeeding or holding baby? I thought I'd do lots of crafty things but that hasn't happened yet 🎨

Pictured is the book I'm rereading at the moment (so excited to read Big Little Truths, the sequel to Big Little Lies!) and a glass of non-alc w**e 🍹 I'm enjoying the alcohol free life - not sure when I'll try the real stuff again

✨ Clinic space available for rent - Croydon VIC

As I prepare for my maternity leave, we are also getting ready to welcome a new practitioner to share our beautiful consulting room at Synergy Massage & Wellness, and we're looking for the right person to join us!

We'd love to welcome a practitioner who complements our clinic - perhaps working in the perinatal, paediatric or men's health space - think pelvic floor physio, lactation consultant, paediatric naturopathy or osteopathy, speech pathology, infant & family OT, men's fertility, etc. If you work with babies, kids or parents in any capacity, you could be a great fit. Or perhaps you work in a slightly different area - let's chat more!

Our clinic is a warm, collaborative clinic, currently with a women's health focus. Our current team includes a Clinical Nutritionist, Counsellor, Myotherapist and Osteopath - all focused on supporting women and families through the perinatal journey and beyond. We refer to each other, cheer each other on, and genuinely enjoy sharing a space. It's really important to us that whoever joins our clinic fits this collaborative & friendly vibe.

The room is available in full day blocks on Wednesdays or over the weekend, or a half day block on Thursday afternoons.

Please email [email protected] or send me a DM for more info. Do you know someone who would be the perfect fit? Please feel free to tag them below or send this post to them.

A little moment in clinic today that felt worth sharing.

We were reviewing a client’s microbiome results and landed on something simple but powerful. Seasonal eating.

When you eat what’s in season, your foods naturally rotate and your plant diversity increases without overthinking it. Exactly what your gut microbiome thrives on.
