💛 NATIONAL WEEK OF DEAF PEOPLE | 21–27 SEPTEMBER 💛

This week, Future Beacons is proud to recognise National Week of Deaf People and celebrate Deaf people, their communities, culture and language.

National Week of Deaf People is an opportunity to build greater awareness of Deaf communities and recognise the importance of accessible communication and inclusion.

🤟 Did you know?
Auslan is the Australian sign language and is an important part of Deaf culture and
communication in Australia.
This week, why not take a moment to:
✨ Learn a few basic Auslan signs
✨ Learn more about Deaf culture
✨ Think about how we can make communication more accessible
✨ Celebrate the achievements and contributions of Deaf people
✨ Encourage inclusion in our communities

At Future Beacons, we believe inclusion starts with recognising that everyone communicates differently and everyone deserves to be understood, respected and included. 💛

🤟 Happy National Week of Deaf People! 🤟

⭐ Understanding NDIS Capital Supports

We’ve explored Core Funding and Capacity Building Funding -> now let’s take a closer
look at the third main NDIS funding category: Capital Supports.

Capital Supports are generally for higher-cost assistive technology, equipment and
modifications that can help improve your independence, safety and participation in
everyday life. Depending on your individual plan, Capital Supports may include:
♿ Assistive Technology – such as mobility equipment, communication devices or other disability-related technology.
🏡 Home Modifications – changes to your home that improve accessibility and safety,
such as ramps, handrails or accessible bathroom modifications.
🚗 Vehicle Modifications – modifications that may help you travel more safely and
independently.
🛏 Specialist Equipment – disability-related equipment required to support your individual needs.

💡 Unlike many Core supports, Capital funding is generally not flexible. Funding is
provided for specific approved supports, so it’s important to check what has been included in your NDIS plan before purchasing an item or arranging a modification.
The right equipment or modification can do more than make everyday tasks easier - it can help reduce barriers and create greater opportunities for choice, independence and participation.

Not sure what your Capital Supports funding covers? Your Support Coordinator, Plan
Manager or NDIS contact can help you understand what has been approved in your plan.

⭐ Understanding NDIS Capacity Building Funding
We’ve looked at Core Funding and how it can support your everyday needs. Now, let’s take a closer look at another important part of an NDIS plan: Capacity Building Funding.

So, what does Capacity Building actually mean?
Capacity Building supports are designed to help you develop skills, build confidence and become more independent over time.
Depending on your individual plan and goals, this may include supports such as:
🧑⚕ Therapy and allied health supports
🤝 Support Coordination
🍳 Developing everyday living skills
🚌 Building skills to access your community independently
🎯 Working towards your personal goals
The key difference? While Core Funding often helps with your everyday support needs, Capacity Building is focused on developing your abilities and independence for the future. For example, rather than simply receiving help to prepare a meal, Capacity Building support may focus on learning the skills to plan, prepare and cook meals more independently.

💡 Remember: Your NDIS funding is individual to you. The Capacity Building supports available will depend on what’s included in your plan and how they relate to your goals. Understanding your funding can help you make more informed choices about your supports and get the most out of your NDIS plan.

⭐ Understanding NDIS Core Funding

In our previous post, we introduced the three main NDIS funding categories. Today, let's take a closer look at the first one: Core Funding.

One of the most common questions we hear is, "What is Core Funding?"
Core Funding is designed to help participants with the everyday supports they need to live more independently and achieve their goals.

It may be used to support things like:
🏡 Daily living assistance
👥 Community participation
🚗 Transport supports
🛍 Consumables
🤝 Support worker assistance

One important thing to remember is that many Core supports are flexible. Depending on your NDIS plan, you may be able to use your Core Funding across different Core support categories to best meet your needs.

Understanding how your funding works can help you make the most of your NDIS plan and ensure you're receiving the supports that are right for you. If you're unsure about your funding or would like help understanding your plan, our friendly team is always happy to help.

⭐️ Understanding Your NDIS Funding

One of the most important parts of your NDIS plan is understanding what each funding category is designed for.

Your plan may include funding across three main categories:

🏡 Core Supports: Helps with everyday activities and the supports you need in daily life.

📈 Capacity Building Supports: Helps you build skills, increase independence and work towards your long-term goals.

🦽 Capital Supports: Funds higher-cost items such as assistive technology, equipment and home or vehicle modifications.

Each participant’s plan is different because it’s based on their individual goals, needs and circumstances. Understanding the purpose of each funding category can help you make informed decisions and get the most out of your NDIS plan.

💡 Remember: If you’re ever unsure about what your funding can be used for, don’t guess, ask your Support Coordinator, Plan Manager or provider. Having the right information can make a big difference.

At Future Beacons, we’re passionate about helping participants understand their plans and navigate the NDIS with confidence.
