đź’Ş MOVEMENT OF THE WEEK: WALL SLIDES

When was the last time you gave your shoulders a little attention?

From reaching into cupboards to getting dressed or carrying groceries, your shoulders help you manage so many everyday tasks. Yet, we often overlook how important it is to keep them moving!

The good news? You don't need fancy equipment or a complicated workout to give your upper body some attention. Sometimes, a simple wall is all you need! 🏡

Swipe through to learn how to perform wall slides and why they're worth adding to your routine!

Have you noticed that everyday activities are starting to feel a little harder than they used to?

Perhaps your shoulders feel uncomfortable while enjoying your favourite hobby, your back feels stiff after sitting, or you simply don't feel as strong as you once did.

These changes can be frustrating, especially when they begin to affect the things you enjoy. But staying active and maintaining your strength can make a meaningful difference in how you move and feel each day.

đź’Ş Our Telehealth Group Exercise Program helps older adults build strength, improve flexibility and mobility, and feel more confident moving through live, physiotherapy-led group sessions from the comfort of home.

With guided movements and a welcoming group environment, you can exercise at your own pace while working towards staying active and independent.

What does staying active today have to do with the way you move in the years ahead? đź’Ş

As we get older, changes in strength, balance, and mobility can gradually affect everyday activities. Regular physical activity gives your body opportunities to keep working on these abilities and maintain the physical capacity needed for daily life.

And staying active doesn’t always mean travelling to a gym or exercise class. Telehealth exercise can provide a structured way to keep moving from home while exercising alongside others.

Our latest blog explores the connection between physical activity, healthy ageing and maintaining independence, plus how telehealth can make regular exercise easier to include in your week.

⏱️ MYTH: Exercise has to be long to count.

Finding a big block of time for exercise isn’t always easy — but being active doesn’t have to happen all at once.

Shorter periods of movement throughout the day can contribute to your overall physical activity. A walk, some movement around the house or a structured exercise session can all be part of keeping active.

What matters is building regular movement into your routine. Instead of thinking, “I don’t have enough time to exercise today,” look for opportunities to be active when they fit — even if they’re shorter than you expected.

Over the course of the day and week, those periods of activity can add up and help you work towards recommended physical activity levels.

Move of the Week: Standing Hamstring Curls 🦵

Your hamstrings do more than bend your knee. These muscles at the back of your thighs work alongside your glutes, quadriceps and calves to support many of the movements you use throughout the day.

From walking and getting up from a chair to climbing stairs, strong hamstrings play an important role in keeping your lower body moving well.

This week, we’re practising Standing Hamstring Curls — a simple exercise you can do at home using a sturdy chair for support. As you build strength, resistance can also be added using ankle weights or a resistance band.

Ever notice how the first few repetitions feel controlled, but the way you move starts to change as you continue?

It’s easy to focus on completing the movement and forget about what happens before the next one begins. Taking a brief moment to return to your starting position can help you notice raised shoulders, leaning or rushing—and give you a chance to regain control.

It’s not about making every repetition look perfect. It’s about staying aware of how you’re moving from beginning to end.

Starting a new health goal is one thing. Finding ways to make it part of everyday life is another. đź’š

Having someone close to you involved can make the experience more enjoyable. A partner, family member or friend can share the routine with you, encourage you to keep going and recognise the progress that might be easy to overlook yourself.

And that support doesn’t have to stop with the person beside you.

Our Telehealth Group Exercise Program gives older adults an opportunity to take part in live, guided group exercise from home. It brings regular movement and social connection into the week, while giving you the option to have someone you care about join the experience with you.
