What do you actually make at Spirit Quest? 🌿

Across the retreat, you are guided through the making of your own Medicine Drum, drum be**er, rattle and feather saining tool.

The point is not to rush toward a finished object. The making itself is part of the journey — learning the materials, working carefully with your hands and building relationship with the tools you will eventually carry home.

No previous making experience is required.

SAMHAIN: A SEASONAL THRESHOLD

Behind the costumes and carved pumpkins sits a much older seasonal story.

Samhain belongs to Gaelic tradition. In Ireland, it marked the beginning of winter on 1 November, with celebrations taking place the evening before.

It was a time of gathering, sharing food, protecting the household and remembering those who had died. Stories of spirits and the Otherworld were part of the folklore surrounding this turning of the year.

For many people who observe Samhain today, it offers a pause to remember, acknowledge endings and consider what they wish to carry forward.

I can begin with something simple: tell a story about someone I miss, prepare a meal they loved, or sit quietly with a photograph.

What is one memory you would like to keep alive?

A few minutes outside. Your hand resting on your drum. Returning to a practice that has been waiting for you.

There are small ways to begin again.

We do not return once. We learn how to return.

There’s something about working with natural materials that brings my attention back to what I’m doing.

Making a drum or a rattle takes time. I have to notice how the materials feel and make adjustments along the way. That’s part of what I love about it.

What do you enjoy making or doing with your hands?

I love seeing how October looks in other parts of the world. Autumn leaves, pumpkins and people settling in for cooler days.

Here in Queensland, I’m enjoying the lighter mornings and spending a little more time outside.

Looking back through my spring photographs, I noticed the kangaroos still had their lovely thick winter coats. It made me smile. The calendar had moved on, but they were taking their time.

I think that’s why I keep coming back to watching what’s happening around me. There’s always something I haven’t noticed, even in a place I know well.

You might like to take your morning cuppa outside this week. Stay a few minutes and see who turns up, what you can hear, or whether something has started to flower.

I’d love to hear what October looks like at your place.

SAMHAIN UNDER A SOUTHERN SKY

There are people I would love to sit beside again. To hear their voice, have a laugh and tell them what has been happening.

For me, one of those people is my dad.

When I look up at the stars, I send him love. I like to think that somehow it finds him.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere, October brings longer days and new growth. The birds are busy, and there is plenty happening in the garden. It feels like a beautiful place to remember someone, sitting outside as the evening settles around me.

This Samhain, I am also thinking about the family who came before him. I want to know more than their names and dates. I want to know who they loved, what their homes were like and what made them laugh.

Some of their stories are still waiting to be found. I feel closer to them each time I learn a little more.

I’ll be looking at the stars again this Samhain. There are a few things I’d like to tell Dad.

I found a real love for making when I began creating my own tools.

That love is still at the heart of Earthcraft. Working with natural materials, taking time with the process, and helping others make something that holds meaning for them.

If you are new here, welcome. Explore Earthcraft's workshops, retreats and handmade ceremonial tools, and see what speaks to you.

I don’t always have the whole idea worked out before I start making.

Sometimes I just lay out the materials and see what I’m drawn to. There’s room to try something, change it and learn as I go.

If there’s something you’ve been wanting to begin, what would be a small first step?

Lea-Anne’s Spirit Quest reflection 🌿

Lea-Anne offers a simple, clear recommendation of the retreat experience. Sometimes that is the most useful kind of testimonial: one Journeyer saying to another, this was worth doing.

Spirit Quest is a seven-day residential Earthcraft journey through preparation, making, ceremony, reflection and return. No previous drum-making or ceremonial experience is required.

The Land Does Not Read the Calendar — Part 4
Learn to Read Your Place

Who shares this place with you?

Watching the animals around us is one way to begin reading the land. Notice where they feed, where they rest and which places they return to.

Then look a little wider.

What is flowering? What birds can you hear? Is the ground dry or damp? What has changed since the last rain?

Start with what you can see. Write it down, take a photograph, and return another day. Over time, those small observations can become a record of your relationship with a place.

What animals have you been noticing where you live?

Photographs from Michelle’s collection.
