CASE STUDY | When the mental load starts showing up in your body.

She’s in her 40s. Two kids. A job. A household to run. A head full of things to remember, organise, plan and get done.

And somewhere in amongst looking after everyone else, her own body started asking for attention.

Today’s client presented with neck and jaw pain, restricted rotation when looking left and right, and an aching jaw that became more noticeable when opening her mouth and eating.

Sound familiar?

For many women in midlife, the physical discomfort can become another thing to manage on an already overflowing to-do list.

What I found and how I approached treatment

My assessment and treatment focused on the cervical region, jaw and surrounding soft tissues, taking into consideration her restricted movement, jaw discomfort and overall presentation.

Her treatment included:

• Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) techniques to support fluid movement and tissue comfort.

• Myofascial release to the neck and jaw to address areas of soft tissue restriction.

• Trigger point therapy to the masseter, temporalis and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles.

• Flash cupping to selected areas around the jaw, temple and neck.

• Intraoral jaw release and targeted release around the zygomatic region.

• Dry needling to selected muscles, alongside anterior and posterior neck soft tissue techniques.

The aim was to address the areas contributing to her symptoms, support comfortable movement and help her return to everyday activities with less discomfort.

I’m no Doctor but this is what I’d prescribe if you felt defeated by your body

* CONNECTION *

Oxytocin is what can be missing.

Call that friend and go for coffee

Ring your sister and talk about what’s going on for you

Give your partner a 20 sec hug instead of a 2 sec one.

Get people around you that resonate and understand.

I would also connect with your breath, understand what is sore….
A frozen shoulder?
Bloating, Chest and abdominal tightness ?
Ache in your jaw from clenching?
Pain in your hip?

Would love to explore and help…. We can investigate your pain, talk through what’s changed, find other health professionals to combine care……

Take a seat in my clinic and a big deep breath…. You are safe here x

I’m not someone to be fixed.
I’m someone to be understood.

There’s a big difference.

Sometimes your body isn’t broken. It’s communicating.

The tension, pain, fatigue, changes, overwhelm or symptoms you’re experiencing deserve curiosity, not judgement.

You don’t need someone to tell you what’s wrong with you.

You need someone willing to listen, understand the bigger picture and help you work with your body, not against it.

Because you are not a problem to solve.

You are a person to understand.

If I sit and simply just take a few deeper breaths, I stop long enough to know what my body and mind need.

Now 40’ish 😂 In my 40’s, I understand what I need to FEEL good. It’s also becoming a little harder to maintain my habits as some weeks everything feels hard.

Having many conversations with women about the unpredictability and how varied each month is for us.

What helps me is slowing down some weeks….. writing down symptoms or how I feel that day that may be different from the last month…

In my 40’ish era what feels different for me is:

More Aches and pains
Headaches
Allergies-Dry throat and need to cough no matter how much water I drink, skin irritations
Mood
Brain fog
Oestrogen lowering

So if you see me and I’m irritable, scratching my skin and can’t remember my own name… it’s just the beginnings of this long or maybe short Peri road for me!

I’m learning too and I love soaking up the research and knowledge…. So just putting some stuff on here and having conversations to put more awareness out for women everywhere feeling like their body and mind isn’t theirs anymore.

High up on my habits to feel good is surrounding myself with Awesome humans.

I have amazing family and friends. Having supportive women around you builds you up to Feel great and gives you the chance to make them feel good too!

One habit I am going to aim for this next month is slowing down when I need (boring but necessary), no is a complete sentence.

Why does everything feel tighter in perimenopause?

As hormones fluctuate, your nervous system can become more sensitive to stress. Add poor sleep, mental load and the physical changes of perimenopause, and your body may spend more time in a protective, “on guard” state.

That can mean increased muscle tension, altered pain sensitivity and feeling tighter or more achy through your muscles and connective tissues.

And this isn’t just in your head. Research shows that muscle and joint pain becomes significantly more common during perimenopause, with stress and other menopausal symptoms also associated with greater pain. (PubMed)

A few things that help during this phase of your life is:

Breath work- I try to filter into my day a 4 count in through the nose and 6 count out through the nose or mouth

Sharing the mental load (if you can)

Mobility Exercise- moving all my joints through their range of movement.

Strength exercise consistently- I go to FITNESS COACH strength gym to lift heavy as that is what my body needs and I never thought I could but with consistency I can now lift heavy

Myotherapy treatments- I am a Myo and I also practice what I preach and get Myotherapy treatments for breathwork, abdominal release, scar release, fascia release and to help my muscles and nervous system recover.

Knowledge is power- educate yourself on your symptoms so that you can get the help you need, knowing why is the first step to making you feel less out of control of your body.

My only tips are I need a Myo treatment weekly and a fat wallet 😩
