๐ข Statement from Australian Council on Smoking and Health ๐ข
More than 30 leading Australian health bodies have penned an open letter to governments to reject ci******es cheaper and v**es more widely available.
"We are absolutely committed to ending the serious issue of the illicit to***co and ni****ne trade, but slashing to***co excise and weakening v**e laws is not the solution," ACOSH CEO Laura Hunter said.
"You cannot price match criminals who can manufacture a packet of illicit ci******es for less than a dollar."
When Canada trialled drastic to***co tax cuts during the 1990s, smoking increased and the policy contributed to an estimated 30,000 additional to***co-related deaths.
The joint letter instead calls for stronger border and supply chain controls, better regulation, and investment in accessible ni****ne replacement therapy and other proven cessation supports.
