In an article for Cheek Media, General Practitioner Dr Rebekah Hoffman explains the role of strength training in protecting muscle mass, maintaining bone density, and supporting long-term health, particularly for people taking GLP-1 weight-management medications.
Research shows that 15–40% of weight lost through GLP-1 medications may come from lean tissue, including skeletal muscle. Without the right support, this can have implications for strength, physical function, and healthy ageing.
“If you’re on a GLP-1 and nobody has mentioned resistance training and protein to you, that’s a gap in your care worth raising at your very next appointment,” writes Dr Hoffman.
As part of wrap around allied health care, Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) play an important role in addressing this gap. They can prescribe and supervise exercise programs designed to help people maintain muscle, strength, and physical function while using GLP-1 medications.
“The practical take away I want to leave you with is to add two sessions a week into your routine. Start anywhere… You don’t need to be an athlete. You need to be a woman in her fifties who intends to get off the toilet unassisted in her nineties,” Dr Hoffman writes.
Managing weight should not come at the expense of long-term health. Find an AEP near you:
