There is one thing I carry that nobody else can carry for me. 💜

And I want to talk about it today.

It is the knowing.

The complete and total knowing of my Individual.

Not the knowing that comes from a report.
Not the knowing that comes from an assessment.
Not the knowing that any provider or professional has from their sessions with them.

The knowing that comes from being there for every moment.

The knowing of what the specific catch in their breath means.
The knowing of which silence is okay and which one is not.
The knowing of what a good day feels like from the moment they wake up.
The knowing of what they need before they know they need it.
The knowing of who they are when nobody is assessing them.

This knowing is mine.

It cannot be transferred.
It cannot be documented completely.
It cannot be replicated by anyone who has not been there for every ordinary extraordinary moment of their life.

And it is the most important thing I bring to every appointment.
Every meeting.
Every conversation about their future.

Not the folder.
Not the report.
Not the goals.

The knowing. 💜

That is mine.

And nobody can take it.

Things NDIS life has made me surprisingly good at. 😄💜

Summarising three months of complex support history in under two minutes for a professional who has four minutes total.

Writing a follow up email that is firm, polite, specific and leaves absolutely no room for confusion. I could teach a masterclass.

Estimating how long a phone call to a government department will take within about 30 seconds of the hold music starting. My accuracy is remarkable. 😂

Packing a bag for any possible scenario. Any scenario. We are prepared for everything.

Reading a room within about 45 seconds of arriving somewhere new to assess whether it is going to work for my individual loved ones.

Explaining something complex in exactly the right way for exactly the person in front of me in this exact moment. Every time different person, different explanation. Every time getting it right.

Holding a complete and detailed conversation while simultaneously monitoring three other things happening in the same room.

Celebrating achievements in ways that match exactly what my individuals need. Not what anyone else expects. What THEY need.

Finding the calm in a moment that is not calm.
Not always....
But more often than I ever thought I would be able to. 💜

These are REAL skills.

Built by a REAL journey.

They are EXTRAordinary, because they are needed. 💜

There is a weight that NDIS carers carry that nobody can see. 💜

It does not show up on a scan.
It does not appear in a report.
Nobody measures it or acknowledges it in a plan review.

But it is there.

Every single day.

It is the mental load of knowing everything about your individual loved ones care at all times.

Every appointment. Every medication. Every provider contact. Every goal. Every update. Every piece of history that matters.

It is the emotional load of advocating for someone you love in a system that was not designed with them in mind.

It is the anticipatory load of always preparing for what comes next before the current thing is even finished.

It is the relational load of holding your family together while also holding everything else.

It is the invisible weight of a thousand small decisions made every single day.

And here is what I want to say about it.

The fact that you carry this without collapsing is not proof that it is not heavy.

It is proof of how STRONG YOU ARE.

The weight is real.

You are real.

And so is the strength that has been built by carrying it. 💜

Things my special Individuals have taught me about joy: 💜

Joy does not require a reason.

So often they will stop everything they are doing to fully inhabit a moment of happiness with absolutely no justification needed.

This pure joy they experience and embrace is often not proportional to the size of the thing (whatever that may be).

The joy they feel about something small is as enormous as the joy they feel about something big.

Sometimes it can feel even bigger.

I LOVE this....that they so easily show their feelings, that they do not manage their joy for the comfort of other people surrounding them.

When they are happy.....everyone knows and everyone feels it.....I have witnessed how contagious their joy can be.

And honestly the environment (and those around) are better for it. Often I watched the reaction of others....I catch the smiles, the glimpses of shared happiness and this makes my heart smile too ❤️

Ive found that when my loved ones find something that brings them joy they return to it 💫

Repeatedly. Enthusiastically. Without apology 😊

Without worrying that enjoying the same thing again makes them seem less interesting.

That joy.....it belongs to this moment right now.
It doesnt belong to a future time when things seem better.
Not when our week has been easier.
Not when everything finally feels sorted.

Right now. This moment. This thing. This glimmer.

THAT is where joy lives 😊

I am still learning. 💜

Things that hit differently when you are an NDIS parent. 💜

A support worker who texts to say they are running 5 minutes late. The courtesy alone. 😭

When a provider actually answers their phone on the first call. A moment of pure disbelief.

A school that truly gets your individual. You did not know how much you needed it until it happened.

Hold music ending. That first moment of a real human voice. The relief is physical.

When someone outside the NDIS world asks a genuinely curious and respectful question about your individual and actually listens to the answer. 💜

A plan review that goes better than you expected. You do not trust it for about 48 hours but eventually you let yourself feel relieved.

When your individual does something that took so long to get to that you have to leave the room for a minute.

A friend who says "I do not fully understand but I am here" and means it.

The first time a new support worker arrives and your individual is genuinely happy to see them. The weight that lifts in that moment.

And the one that hits hardest of all....

Someone seeing your individual the way you have always seen them.

Not through a report.

Through their eyes.

That one.

I want to tell you about the moment I stopped apologising for how we do things. 💜

For a long time I explained, sometimes even overexplained >> Everything.

Why our routine is the way it is.
Why certain environments do not work for us.
Why we arrive early (or sometimes late on purpose) to things or skip things entirely.
Why our celebrations look very different from everyone else's.
Why our timelines are our own and dont match the "norm".
Why our milestones are not the ones on any standard chart or in any standard textbook.

I explained it ALL.
Carefully. Considerately. Making sure nobody felt uncomfortable with the way we live.
But you know what....it became so incredibly draining and took SO much of my energy.

Then one day I just......Stopped.
Not because I stopped caring about other people, because I still do.

The reason I stopped explaining everything was because I started caring more about US, focussing and pouring all my energy into what we needed....
About the family we had built.
About the rhythms that worked for my individuals.
About the extraordinary ordinary life we have figured out how to live beautifully.

We do not need to explain it.

We do not need to apologise for it.

We do not need to make it smaller so other people find it easier to understand.

This is our life. 💜

It is what we make it....and it is a good one.

The parent I was before this journey began and the parent I am now are two very different people. 💜

Id love to take a moment to just talk about this as Im sure many of you can also relate.

Before....
I thought I knew what patience was.
I thought I knew what advocacy looked like.
I thought I knew what unconditional love meant.
I thought I knew what strength felt like.

Then when this journey began.....
Everything I thought I knew has been quietly and completely rewritten.

Thinking about it - the patience I have now is not the patience I was born with.

My patience has been built......
In waiting rooms.
In appointments that run overtime
In mornings that start hard and somehow still become good days.
In showing, teaching and explaining the same thing over-and-over until it 'clicks'.
When I have had to repeat myself multiple times a week on the phone, in person or via emails to teachers, new therapists, supports, Doctors to ensure they understand and have patience with my loved ones.
In moments where I have nothing left to give, yet somehow find something anyway.

The advocacy I have now is not something I studied or read about >>> It grew (and continues to grow) out of love.

Out of sitting across from people and refusing to accept less than what my individuals deserve..

Out of learning the system not because I have wanted to.....but because they need me to. 💜

I am not the same person I was before this journey
>>> I am more.

More patient. More present. More certain about what matters.

More capable of a love that has no conditions and no limits.

Taking notice of the little things and celebrating them in the moment and beyond.

This journey has grown me in ways that nothing else could have.

And honestly, I would not trade this version of myself for anything. 💜
