Halloween can be confusing for someone with dementia.
The knocking, the masks, strangers in costumes at the door. What’s fun for the kids can feel frightening or just plain strange for someone who doesn’t understand what’s going on.
A few things that can help:
- Turn the porch light off if you don’t want visitors, so nobody knocks
- If you do open the door, say hello first, before anyone in a mask steps forward
- Keep a calm, familiar space inside, with the TV or radio on low
