The Gift of Self-Care

A little while ago, I went along to support some friends at their choir concert. As part of the evening, I entered a raffle and, to my surprise, won a prize

We could choose from a lovely range of donated prizes, and when I spotted a reflexology gift voucher, I knew exactly what I needed β€” a little pampering!

It took me a while to book in, but the timing couldn't have been more perfect.

I recently enjoyed a relaxing reflexology session and Indian head massage with Hayley from Foot Therapy by Hayley.

The moment Hayley began the head massage, I could feel myself relaxing. My feet, which work tirelessly every day, received some much-needed TLC, and I left feeling deeply relaxed and nurtured.
What made the experience even more special was discovering that Hayley had generously donated the prize and was not part of the choir.

Our feet do so much for us, yet how often do we stop to care for them?

Reflexology is based on the principle that specific points on the feet correspond with different parts of the body. It was lovely to connect with Hayley and share our interest in holistic wellbeing.

We even chatted about some of the traditional practices I grew up with, including an Ayurvedic home remedy involving placing onion on the soles of the feet and wrapping them before sleep when feeling unwell.

A little reminder: Sometimes, self-care comes to us in unexpected ways. We just need to give ourselves permission to receive it.
Thank you, Hayley, for your warmth, generosity and nurturing care. It was such a beautiful reminder of the importance of slowing down and looking after ourselves, too.

The Power of Connection

Do you have a ritual in your life that naturally brings people together?

I recently did the numbers and realised it's been at least 8 years of catching up with a group of former colleagues, who have become friends, at the same restaurant five times a year.

We celebrate birthdays (even if delayed), usually order the same delicious meals, enjoy an amazing homemade cake made with love, and follow our familiar tradition of treating the birthday person with their meal.

Our conversations cover everything from travels, family and pet updates, celebrations and life's challenges to roof installations, real estate advice and movies and world events!

Despite our different generations, backgrounds and life stages, we share something special: we listen, support and learn from each other.
We're often the last ones to leave, spending hours sharing stories, wisdom, laughter and life.

Last night, I was reminded of the many life decisions we've made along the way and how much life can change in just a few years.

The support, advice, shared wisdom and laughter are difficult to put into words. It's something you really have to experience.

Perhaps this is what having a village looks like in the modern world.

I'm so grateful that this simple ritual has helped our friendships grow stronger over the years which may have naturally diminished over time.
Sometimes, connection doesn't need grand gestures. Just a regular date in the calendar and people who keep showing up.

What rituals help you stay connected?

P.s. it wasn't my birthday but photos of some nice memories along the way

MUSIC, CREATIVITY & CONNECTION
An informal gathering on the Northern Gold Coast

Have you ever wanted to experience mantra singing, but didn't know where to start? Or perhaps you're simply looking for a different way to slow down, connect and try something new?

Recently, I met someone who had the same interest in singing mantras/ Kirtan, and it got me thinking…

There doesn't seem to be much happening on the Northern Gold Coast, so why not bring a few people together and create our own little gathering?

WHAT IS KIRTAN?

Kirtan is a form of devotional singing where we repeat mantras, often in Sanskrit. You don't need to know the words or have a singing voice!

We'll use a playlist (as we are nnot musicians) to play the mantras and sing along if we feel like it. You can sing, hum, listen quietly or simply use the music as a focus for meditation.

No experience, no expectations and absolutely no pressure.

A LITTLE CREATIVE CORNER

Because creativity and connection go hand in hand, I'll also set up a table with craft supplies for anyone who feels like making Christmas cards or writing letters to people in need in our community.

You can get creative while the mantras play, afterwards, or simply enjoy the gathering. It's entirely up to you!

When your different worlds begin to align…

Recently, I've been reflecting on how far I've come and the journey that has brought me to where I am today. I had to update my professional resume and list my qualifications. Seeing them all written down made me pause.

πŸŽ“ Bof Education (Primary)/ B of Arts (Psychology)
πŸŽ“ B of Psychological Science (Honours)
πŸŽ“ Postgraduate Certificate in Career Development

That's 6.5 years at university, as the first in my family to attend higher education.
I've always been a bit of a geek when it comes to learning. I'm the person watching webinars, attending events and constantly seeking opportunities for professional and personal growth. I'm not very good at just sitting in front of the TV and doing nothing!

Recently, changes at work got me thinking… Should I have had pursued 2 extra years to become a registered psychologist?
But I didn't need more study. I wanted life experience.

Life has a way of taking us down different paths, and not every path needs to lead where we initially imagined. For a long time, my professional, personal and family lives felt like separate identities. They rarely crossed over.

But over the past five years, I've been on a journey of self-discovery, exploring personal and spiritual development, creativity, intuition and holistic wellness.

I've been reconnecting with parts of myself that perhaps had been sitting quietly in the background while I focused on my career, family and the expectations of life.

Slowly, these different parts of me are beginning to come together.
My background in education, psychology and counselling, love of learning, creativity, interest in spirituality and holistic wellbeing, cultural upbringing, experiences as a woman and a mum.
And something that has always been important to me: holding space for others.

Sometimes, we don't need someone to fix things for us. We simply need the space to pause, reflect, feel understood and discover our own way forward.

This is where IGNITE Holistic Wellness has come from.
Reconnect. Rediscover. Reignite.

Have you ever felt like different parts of your life were disconnected, and you're now finding ways to bring them together?

A sad day… saying goodbye to my 20-year-old laminator! πŸ₯ΉπŸ’”

This faithful little gadget has been with me through university, my teaching days, pregnancy and parenting.

While my days of cutting, laminating and cutting again have considerably reduced, this laminator has remained forever faithful.

But today, our journey together came to an unexpected end.

I was laminating a student's artwork and, not wanting to waste any space, I added some affirmation cards at the bottom of the page.

My son helped me feed it into the laminator.

Then came the conversation…

πŸ‘¦πŸ» β€œIt hasn't come out.”

πŸ€” β€œWhat do you mean it hasn't come out?”

πŸ‘¦πŸ» β€œI put it in, but it hasn't come out!”

Surely it must have come out somewhere? Maybe it had flown to the other side of the bench? We searched everywhere.

Wait… could it actually be stuck INSIDE?

Turn off the laminator. Call Dad.

Dad had a look.

β€œYes, it's in there!”

OUCH! It's hot!

β€œGet me the screwdriver!”

And so began the laminator surgery. πŸ˜‚

As Dad started unscrewing it, I was thinking…

What beautiful artwork! Oh no… what am I going to do?

Then, a glimmer of hope! Half the artwork was sticking out.

β€œBe careful! Can we save it?”

Several attempts later, more unscrewing, more fiddling… and about half an hour into the operation, I finally surrendered.

β€œDon't worry about the affirmation cards. I just need the artwork!”

Next stop: the ironing board.

With a tea towel over the artwork, I carefully tried to flatten it out.

PHEW! We managed to rescue it! πŸ™

The laminator, however, was another story. πŸ’”

Before saying my final goodbye to my faithful companion, I looked at the affirmation cards that had caused all the drama.

And there they were…

✨ β€œI am ready to embrace every challenge, free of self-doubt.”

✨ β€œI will only focus on things I can control, such as my actions.”

I couldn't help but smile.

A timely reminder about connection.

I went along to the TENx Speakers Tribe Qld event initially to support someone I met a few months ago. But with connection being the theme, the timing couldn't have been better. I had been feeling a little in a slump and was ready for some inspiration.

And inspiration is exactly what I found!

Ten incredible speakers from Queensland, interstate and overseas shared their stories and perspectives on connection. Their backgrounds were so diverse, from a former Olympic athlete, naturopath and GP to leadership in police and fashion design.

Each brought a different angle to the conversation, exploring everything from cultural intelligence and invisible networks to leadership in crisis, the biology of reconnection, remembering who you are, being blindsided by life, and the choices that shape our moments.

What I loved most was the opportunity to connect with the speakers afterwards. After months of preparation, they had delivered their talks, yet beneath their expertise, passion and courage were genuinely lovely people who were willing to share a conversation.

Their courage, passion and vulnerability inspired me.

Whilst I don't aspire to be a speaker myself, I was reminded of how powerful communication can be in sharing a message, influencing others and creating meaningful connections.

One message that resonated with me throughout the day was the importance of reconnecting with yourself.

And isn't that at the heart of what I'm exploring through my own journey and IGNITE Holistic Wellness?

Sometimes we become so caught up in our roles, responsibilities and the expectations of others that we lose touch with ourselves. We can feel disconnected without even realising it.

For me, this journey is about reconnecting with who I am beyond the labels, rediscovering what brings me joy and meaning, and finding ways to help others do the same through creativity, community and connection.

Perhaps today's reminder was exactly what I needed.

Sometimes, we don't need to have everything figured out. We just need to show up, be open to new perspectives and allow ourselves to be inspired.

Sometimes, a little reminder arrives at just the right time.

Recently, I attended Cocreation by Sam Hearn | Empowering Pathways, and was lucky enough to win a LOTUSWEI Flower Essences flower essence called Infinite Love.

Infinite Love is about dissolving feelings of loneliness, isolation and emotional barriers, while encouraging self-love, compassion, connection and a greater openness to giving and receiving love. This really resonated with me, especially with life being so busy lately... juggling parenting, a new workplace, events and community activities with IGNITE Holistic Wellness.

But what exactly is a flower essence?

I've been using flower essences for a few years with the support of Kaitlin Western Kinesiology , and have also incorporated them into my counselling work.

Flower essences are a liquid, bioenergetic remedy made from flowers, traditionally used to support emotional wellbeing.

One thing I've always found fascinating is how the description of a particular flower can resonate with what someone is experiencing.

In my counselling work, exploring a flower essence sometimes helped people recognise feelings they hadn't quite found the words for. They felt seen, and it often opened the door to deeper conversations.

For me, it was a beautiful tool for reflection and self-awareness. An opportunity to pause and explore our emotions can be valuable.

Perhaps Infinite Love is my own little reminder to slow down, nurture my connections and remember that while I'm busy creating spaces for others to connect, I need connection, too....so that's what I plan to do...a creativity challenge for myself.

We all need moments to reconnect with ourselves.

Have you ever explored flower essences? I'd love to hear your experiences

Guess what happened?

WHEN YOUR WATCH THINKS LAUGHTER YOGA IS AN AEROBIC WORKOUT

You know you've had a good laugh when you get home and your watch sends you this notification:

β€œAerobic workout detected! Looks like you were active from 7:02–7:21 pm. Nice!” πŸ˜‚

Guess what I was doing? LAUGHTER YOGA! 🀣

Tonight was another wonderful evening of laughter and sound meditation as part of the Gold Coast Active & Healthy program.

With it being Mental Health Month, we laughed our way through activities that might frustrate us, bring us joy, or simply be good for our wellbeing.

We had participants ranging from children to seniors, and even my own parents joined in the fun! A few were laughing behind the camera.

After all that laughter, we slowed things down with a relaxing sound meditation, allowing the vibrations of the crystal bowls,.gong and other instruments to wash over us.

At IGNITE Holistic Wellness, I believe wellbeing is about nurturing our whole selves β€” mind, body, heart and soul.

Sometimes, looking after ourselves means moving our bodies. Sometimes, it's about slowing down. And sometimes, it's simply about having a good laugh with others!

Who knew laughter yoga could fool your fitness tracker?

Maybe it's a little reminder that wellbeing doesn't always have to feel like hard work!

Want to join us...Next session is on third Thursday of the month on November 19th.
