Sometimes good support is as simple as someone believing you can do something before you believe it yourself.

Not jumping in. Not doing it for you. Not assuming it’s too hard.
Just being there while you have a go and letting you discover “I can actually do this.”

Those moments stick with people. 😊

A person is more than their diagnosis, their support plan or the things they need help with.

They’re the jokes they tell, the music they love, the people they care about, the things they’re good at and the things that drive everyone around them mad.

When support becomes too focused on needs, risks and goals, it’s easy to lose sight of the actual person.

Know the person, not just the support they need. 💙

Having support should open up more of life, not slowly make someone’s world smaller.

More places to go. More people to meet. More things to try. More opportunities to make choices, take a few risks and figure out what actually matters to them.

Good support shouldn’t create a life that revolves around services and workers.

It should help build a life that exists beyond them. 🍃

The best moments aren’t always the ones we planned.

You can plan the activity, organise the shift and know exactly where you’re going. Then something completely unplanned ends up being the best part of the day.

A random conversation. Meeting someone new. Finding somewhere you want to come back to. Or just having a bloody good laugh.

Not every good outcome needs to have been on the plan. 🍃

Most of us learn by trying things, getting things wrong and occasionally making decisions that probably weren’t our best ones.

People with disability deserve that same opportunity.

Our job isn’t to remove every possible risk. It’s to help people understand their choices, manage risks where we can, and still have the freedom to actually live their life. 💙

It’s easy to support someone’s choice when we agree with it.

The harder part is remembering that choice and control also means being able to make decisions we wouldn’t necessarily make ourselves.

We can talk through options, explain consequences and offer support but someone’s life doesn’t become ours to run just because we’re supporting them. 😌

Needing help with parts of your life shouldn’t mean losing your say over the rest of it.

What you do on the weekend. Where you go. Who you spend time with. What you want to learn. Even what you don’t want to do.

Support should help someone live their life, not the life we’ve planned for them. 🙌

It’s easy to step in and help, especially when you know you could get something done quicker.

But sometimes the better support is giving someone the time to have a go themselves.

They might need a hand. They might get it wrong. They might completely surprise you.

Needing support doesn’t mean giving up control.

Someone might need help with communication, personal care, getting around or making sense of their options but their preferences still matter.

What they eat. Where they go. Who they spend time with. What they try. What they say no to.

Good support helps someone have more say in their life, not less. 🍃

Sometimes it’s not about having more activities, more goals or a busier week.

It’s about having somewhere you actually want to go. Somewhere you feel comfortable, know a few faces, enjoy being there and look forward to going back.

That’s when community access starts becoming something more than just getting out of the house.

It starts becoming part of your life. 💙
