Alison is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist and is a national Board Member of the Australian Hypnotherapists' Association. Hypnotherapy allows us to have conversation with your unconscious mind, embedding suggestions that will allow you to think, act and feel differently to how you do now. Everything you have ever heard, everything that you have ever experienced, everything that has ever been said to you, all gets stored in your unconscious mind. These develop into beliefs and patterns that have the power to rule your life. Hypnotherapy will allow you to release patterns, or beliefs, that no longer serve you in your life. We can help you to release negative emotions, weight, anxiety and depression, become a non smoker, stop addictive behaviours and start to lead your ultimate life.

Lesson 2785, A Plan Is Just a Plan

What do you do when the trip you've been counting down to all year suddenly looks different?

Tomorrow I fly to Bali for a week. Three of us have been planning this since the start of the year, and after the year we've all had, we were so ready for the break. Then on Wednesday one of the girls lost her family pet and let us know she wouldn't be coming. I completely respect her decision.

I was left holding a whole mix of feelings. Upset about the money she couldn't get back. Upset that she isn't coming with us. And so sad for the loss she and her family are going through.

Then the guilt crept in. Should we really go off and have a good time while she's at home grieving? Will seeing our photos make her feel worse?

After chatting with her, I realised I still needed to go. In the past I may well have cancelled the whole thing and stayed home, but I need this break just as much as anyone else.

We can care deeply for someone and still look after ourselves. Both can be true at the same time.

So if your plans have changed lately, be gentle with yourself. A plan is just a plan. It isn't set in stone. It's how we meet the change that really matters.

See you on the flip side.

Lesson 2785, Will You Ever Drink Again?

It's a really interesting question, isn't it?

One of my clients asked me this yesterday, and my answer came 3 will you choose today?

Lesson 2874 You're allowed to change your mind

When did changing your mind start to feel like failing?

A decision that once felt so right can quietly stop fitting. The plan, the routine, the version of yourself you promised you would always be. Nothing dramatic happened. You simply grew, and something that used to feel like home now feels a little too small.

So often we hold on anyway. We worry about what people will think, or that we wasted our time, or that we should have known better back then.

But the person who made that choice did the best they could with what they knew at the time. They were not wrong. They just didn't have what you know now.

As we learn more about ourselves, our needs and priorities shift. That isn't being unreliable. That is being honest with yourself.

Changing your mind does not erase the person you were. It can be a way of listening to who you are now.

So if something no longer feels right, you don't have to rush. Just notice it. Sit with it gently and ask yourself what you need today, not what you needed back then.

You are allowed to outgrow things. Even the things you once chose with your whole heart.

Lesson 2783, The small things count.

We often wait for the big moment. The breakthrough, the fresh start, the day everything suddenly feels different.

But most change does not arrive like that. It is much quieter. It is taking a breath before you snap back. It is going to bed a little earlier, saying no when you would usually say yes, or speaking to yourself a little more kindly than you did yesterday.

On their own these moments can feel like nothing, and you might even wonder if they are worth it. But every time you make that choice again, you are teaching yourself a new way to be. Slowly it starts to feel more natural than the old way ever did.

Then one day you look back and realise you are not reacting the way you used to. Nothing dramatic happened. You just kept showing up for yourself in small ways.

So if all you manage today is one small step, let it count. Notice it. Be proud of it.

The small things are often the big things in disguise.

Lesson 2782, Why Do You Need to Stay?

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is go home.

On Saturday I organised my 40 year school reunion at the Paragon Hotel in Circular Quay. We're nearly all 58 now, and honestly the faces hadn't really changed, just a few more lines and a lot of smiles. So many women told me they'd been anxious about coming, and so many said they'd been quietly watching my journey without ever commenting. That meant more than they know.

At about quarter past five my friend Julie asked if I wanted to leave with her. I said no, I'll stay, I organised it, I need to stay. Then I was standing in the bathroom thinking, I am so tired. My leg was sore from hours on hard cement, and a little voice asked me, why do you need to stay?

The answer was, I didn't.

So I went home. By 6:30 I was on the lounge with an ice pack on my leg, and the others kept going until 10 or 11 and had a fantastic night. Nothing fell apart because I left.

How often do we stay because we think we should, long after our body has already told us it's done? Going home isn't letting anyone down. Sometimes it's simply listening to yourself.

So next time that quiet voice asks why you need to stay, be honest with the answer. That's how I want to finish out 2026, finding the joy and the fun in every little moment I can, and going home when I've had enough.

Lesson 2781, Forty Years Later and It Felt Like Yesterday

Forty years. How does that even happen?

Our 40 year reunion is done and I am still smiling. It was so lovely to catch up with so many people. Within minutes the years seemed to melt away and the laughter came back like it had never left.

Everyone walked in carrying forty years of life. Work, family, wins, losses, all the things none of us could have predicted back then. And yet none of it needed explaining. There is something really special about being with people who knew you before you became who you are now.

We spend so much time looking for where we belong. Sometimes it is right there in the people who have known us all along, quietly waiting for us to say hello again.

So if there is someone you have been meaning to reach out to, maybe this is your sign. Send the message. Make the call. Connection does not have an expiry date.

Some people are still glad to know you, all these years later.

Lesson 2780, Forty Years On and I'm Just Going as Me

Tomorrow is my 40 year school reunion. Yes, I did my HSC in 1986.

I organised it. I've been chatting with everyone who's coming. And still there's this little anxious feeling sitting with me. I know exactly where it comes from.

At school I was the dummy. I got the lowest mark in the HSC. I was the rebel, the outspoken one, and every report said "if she tried harder." I now know that was my ADHD, but back then it just became my reputation.

At our 20 year reunion I turned up in a suit, for God's sake, trying to impress everyone. At the 30th I'd just started dabbling in hypnotherapy and they all looked at me like, but you're sitting there drinking and smoking? Fair point.

So much has changed in me since then. This time I'm just going as myself.

Anxiety can pop up at any age. Walk back into a room full of people who knew you at 17 and the old version of you tries to walk in too, along with everything you think they still expect you to be.

So when those thoughts come in, ask yourself, are they real? Are they true? Am I dumb? For me the answer is absolutely not. I may not be a doctor or a lawyer or any of the things the other women are, but I am happy and content in who I am.

I can't control how anyone else enjoys the day. I can only show up as me.

Whatever your version of the reunion is, you don't have to go as who you were. You get to go as who you are.

So What Are People Coming to See You For?

I was out with friends the other night when someone asked me what people mostly come to see me for, and whether that has changed over the years. It was such a good question that I went back and pulled some reports, and honestly the trends surprised me.

I'm seeing a lot of women, young women and women my age moving through perimenopause, coming in to cut back on their drinking. Not to give it up completely, just to feel in control again. To enjoy a few drinks and know when it's time to go home, rather than finishing a bottle on the couch every night.

I'm also seeing more younger men struggling with co***ne and gambling, to the point where it is hurting their families and their bank accounts. Why is this happening so much here in the Shire? I don't know. But I do know this.

Very often it's a wife or partner who reaches out first. And as much as they love them, the person has to want the change for themselves. Nobody can want it for you.

So if there is a habit you keep promising yourself you'll change, and you feel like you've tried everything, be gentle with yourself. Wanting something different is where it all starts. Maybe this is the thing that finally works for you.

Lesson 2779 the relief of leaving work behind.

Last week at work, I realised something that brought me a huge sense of relief.

When I owned the yoga business, going away didn’t mean leaving work behind. There were always things to do for the business, like the pays, so my laptop or tablet had to come with me.

Now that I no longer own the yoga business, I don’t have to carry those responsibilities into my holiday. I can leave them behind and enjoy being away.

It’s a lovely feeling to realise that something which used to be part of every trip no longer has to come along with me.

A lovely feeling with tears and giggles.
