Winter no 2 (in retirement) on the Sunshine Coast for this recovering type A personality! It continues to be a whole new chapter, discovery in my 60’s.
💫
Learning how to BE a human ‘being’, dropping self-expectation, allowing the ordinary to become the extra-ordinary, stopping long enough to ‘see’ what is in front of me…
💫
Yes, of course I still get out of bed, meditate, practise asana or go to the gym or swim. Read, write, clean, cook.…but with an altered focus. Letting people, situations, events unfold with less force, less effort, less desired outcome.
💫
Enjoying the pauses for reflection, the inner landing.
💫
It’s not all rainbows and unicorns however I AM getting better at sitting with what is, savouring both the yin and the yang.
💫
How is your journey in retirement?

That constant inner chatter we have in our mind from the minute we wake up, you know the stuff?! It's mostly negative and involves doubt, worry and fear, which often becomes suffering (in yoga we call 'dukkha') in the form of anxiety, despair, depression.
😮
That inner control freak, too much ego, is a by-product of Asmita, our over identification with ego, who we think we are. In the yoga sutras it’s one of the kleshas, afflictions of the mind, and is largely responsible for the bad perceptions of ourselves.
😮
To reduce or neutralise the effect of Asmita, notice what you are saying to yourself during your practice e.g. ‘try harder’, ‘you’re not good enough’. Once you stop 'pushing' from the mind and 'be' with what you are doing, YOGA truly happens.
😮
Practise this with me in early November when I'm facilitating seven days of guidance online to start, continue or strengthen your meditation journey to 'step back' from the mind. Follow the link in bio to find out more...

Avidya - ignorance 😵‍💫 NO, this is not that you/we are stupid 😵‍💫 but that we 'ignore' or 'forget' who we truly are. We forget that we are part of a greater whole, a consciousness beyond what we experience, and that we are not the centre of the Universe!
🧘‍♀️
The ancient yogic sutras remind us that the five afflictions of the mind, the kleshas, begin to loosen their grip on our minds through regular practice - asana, pranayama, meditation. However often we require support to start and continue.

Together with Integral Yoga Institute S.F. in early November, I'm facilitating seven days of guidance online to start, continue or strengthen your meditation journey. Follow the link in bio to find out more...

'I want to be famous so that I can learn to be humble'!
😂
Oh how the egoic mind tricks us to believe our all important story lines, our 'ME' project.
😂
A beautiful reminder this week from a past student (of whom I know only a little) that by being ourselves, authentic, unattached, we never quite know the ripple effect of our actions into another's day and life.

'Nothing changes if nothing changes’. I fondly remember these words from my dear old dad 😇💯And I’ll be the first to admi...

'Nothing changes if nothing changes’. I fondly remember these words from my dear old dad 😇
💯
And I’ll be the first to admit that consistency in practise, whether yoga poses, breathing practices, meditation, understanding philosophy, living the principles of yoga, is often not easy. Yes even now with more time in retirement!
💯
But at some point, we all simply need to practise. We can know the benefits, read about the effects, explore the philosophy - but there is a limit to how much we can understand through words alone. And I do love words!
💯
It's my own practice that shapes an understanding of my life, who I really am, how I choose to interact in the world. It's through my direct experience from practise, my own inner work.
💯
What we give our energy and attention to shapes our life. We can't just think about it! Unless we practise, nothing shifts.
