🌿 TŪĪ ✨
E koekoe te tūī, e ketekete te kākā, e kūkū te kererū.
(The tūī chatters, the kākā cackles, the kererū coos.)
~ Māori whakataukī
At first I found images of the Tūī online and was instantly impressed by their beautiful plumage and dignified manner. Later my warmth towards the Tūī grew as I learned that they’re revered in Māori culture as a guardian of travellers and a messenger connecting the natural world with spiritual realms. Finally on Tiritiri Matangi Island, a wonderful haven for endemic birdlife, I got to meet the Tūī up close and personal. To my surprise, their calls and songs were incredibly varied and complex, their flights loud and powered, and their fights for territory frequent, rapid and aggressive. Letting go of my sweet imagination, I think of the Tūī not less but more, and begin to see them as a guardian of different voices.
The meaning behind the Māori proverb quoted above is simple: everybody has a voice which should be respected.
In the pursuit of harmony, may the Tūī bring vitality and protection to each of our voices.
