We tend to think that herbs are gentle solutions for the gut.

However, many herbs are *not* selective antimicrobials, which means they kill pathogenic bacteria as well as beneficial species like Bifidobacterium.

Two of my favorite selective herbs are garlic and pomegranate husk. They effectively kill pathogens while nourishing beneficial microbes, which is exactly what you want when treating dysbiosis.

Chamomile is so gentle that it is typically suitable for children as well. It works well for digestive complaints in kids, like mild colic, tummy upsets, nervous digestion, and cramping, and it can also help with sleep.

For children, I use a weak/diluted chamomile tea, though I would start with small amounts and watch for any sensitivity. Some children, particularly those with ragweed or Asteraceae family allergies, may react to chamomile, so that is the main caution.

Please note that today is your final chance to register for the Advanced Microbiome Manipulation Course.

It's supplemental fructooligosaccharide (FOS), and yes, it does taste sweet like sugar!

It dissolves quickly in water, making it easy to incorporate for even the pickiest of eaters.

Watch this quick video to learn more about the incredible benefits.

This study by Zhou et al. (2026) demonstrates how lifestyle, stress, and toxicant exposure can profoundly affect gut health.

One key takeaway is the impact of diesel exhaust fumes on IBD risk. Higher exposure to diesel exhaust was associated with a 56% increased risk of IBD!

I've worked with many patients who unnecessarily restricted their diet due to the results of an unreliable food sensitivity test.

Not all tests are problematic, but we have to be very discerning when choosing (and spending money on) them.

The gold standard way to determine food reactions is an elimination-reintroduction diet.

Have you used food sensitivity testing and wondered about the results?

Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii CNCM I-745 is my favorite probiotic, and it also has a really incredible origin story.

There are still a few spots available for The Advanced Microbiome Manipulation course, the most comprehensive course of its kind.

This course provides you with weekly pre-recorded lecture content (covering over 25 different topic areas) that you can watch at your own pace each week, and dedicated weekly live Q&A sessions over Zoom to go deeper into the weekly topics, get your questions answered, learn from the questions others in the course ask, and discuss cases.

This is a rare opportunity to learn directly with me; I'll be leading the weekly live classes.

Please learn more about the course via the link in the comments; we hope to see you this October!
