Can’t smell like you used to? Don’t simply brush it off. πŸ‘ƒ

Loss or reduction of smell, known as anosmia, can happen for many reasons. Sometimes it follows a cold or viral infection, while other possible causes include sinus problems, allergies, nasal blockage, certain medicines or other underlying health conditions.

You may notice:
β€’ Familiar smells becoming weaker
β€’ Food tasting different or bland
β€’ Difficulty detecting perfumes, coffee or cooking smells
β€’ A complete or partial loss of smell
β€’ Symptoms that persist after an illness

If your sense of smell has suddenly changed, isn’t returning, or continues to worsen, a GP review can help investigate the possible cause and determine whether further assessment is needed.

Frequent nosebleeds? When should you worry?

Nosebleeds, also called epistaxis, are common and often happen because the delicate blood vessels inside the nose become irritated or dry. But if they keep coming back, are unusually heavy or happen without an obvious reason, it’s worth getting checked.

Possible triggers can include:
β€’ Dry air or irritation
β€’ Allergies or frequent nose blowing
β€’ Nose picking or minor injury
β€’ Certain medicines, including blood thinners
β€’ High blood pressure in some cases

If you have recurring nosebleeds, a GP can review possible causes and advise whether further investigation is needed.

⚠️ Seek urgent medical care if the bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, makes you feel faint or unwell, or does not stop after applying firm pressure.

One leg suddenly hot, swollen or painful? Don’t ignore it.

These can be warning signs of a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) β€” a blood clot that usually forms in a deep vein of the leg.

Possible signs can include:
β€’ Swelling in one leg
β€’ Pain or tenderness, often in the calf
β€’ Warmth or redness of the skin
β€’ A heavy or tight feeling in the affected leg

DVT needs prompt medical assessment because a clot can sometimes travel to the lungs and cause a **pulmonary embolism**.

⚠️ **Seek urgent medical care** for sudden one-sided leg swelling or pain. If you also develop **chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing up blood, dizziness or fainting, call 000 immediately.**

Vertigo without a typical headache? It could still be migraine-related.

Vestibular migraine can cause episodes of dizziness, vertigo, imbalance or motion sensitivity β€” sometimes with little or no headache at all.

Symptoms may include:
β€’ Spinning or rocking sensations
β€’ Feeling unsteady or off-balance
β€’ Nausea or motion sensitivity
β€’ Sensitivity to light or sound
β€’ Symptoms triggered by movement, busy environments or certain visual patterns

Because vertigo can have many different causes, ongoing or recurring episodes should be medically assessed.

If dizziness is sudden and severe or comes with weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe headache, fainting or trouble walking, seek urgent medical care.

Does your mood seem to drop during certain times of the year? It could be Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression linked to seasonal changes. For some people, changes in daylight and routine can affect mood, energy, sleep and motivation.

Possible signs may include:
β€’ Persistent low mood
β€’ Feeling unusually tired or lacking energy
β€’ Sleeping more than usual
β€’ Changes in appetite
β€’ Difficulty concentrating
β€’ Losing interest in things you usually enjoy
β€’ Feeling less social or more withdrawn

If these changes seem to return around the same time each year or are starting to affect everyday life, it’s worth speaking with a GP or mental health professional.

Support is available, and early conversations can make a real difference.

Burning feet but routine nerve tests look normal? Small fibre neuropathy could be one possible cause.

Small fibre neuropathy affects the tiny nerve fibres that help control pain, temperature sensation and some automatic body functions. Because these fibres are so small, routine nerve conduction tests can sometimes appear normal even when symptoms are present.

Symptoms may include:
β€’ Burning or stinging pain in the feet
β€’ Pins and needles or altered sensation
β€’ Increased sensitivity to touch or temperature
β€’ Numbness or unusual sensations
β€’ Symptoms that may gradually spread upwards

There are many possible causes, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune conditions and other medical issues, so proper assessment is important.

If burning, tingling or numbness is persistent or getting worse, book a GP review to discuss your symptoms and whether further investigation is needed.

Numbness in your ring and little fingers? It could be cubital tunnel syndrome.

Cubital tunnel syndrome happens when the **ulnar nerve** becomes compressed or irritated around the elbow. This can cause tingling, numbness or discomfort that travels into the ring and little fingers.

Common symptoms can include:
β€’ Pins and needles in the ring and little fingers
β€’ Numbness that comes and goes
β€’ Aching or discomfort around the elbow
β€’ Weak grip or hand weakness
β€’ Symptoms that worsen when the elbow stays bent for long periods

If the numbness is persistent, getting worse or affecting your grip and everyday activities, a GP assessment can help identify the cause and guide the right next steps.

Tiny rough bumps on your arms that never seem to go away? It could be keratosis pilaris.

Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition caused by a build-up of keratin that blocks the hair follicles. It often appears as small, rough bumps on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks.

You may notice:
β€’ Tiny skin-coloured or reddish bumps
β€’ Dry or rough-feeling skin
β€’ Mild redness or irritation
β€’ Bumps that can become more noticeable in colder or drier weather

Keratosis pilaris is generally harmless, but if the area is persistent, irritated or you’re unsure what the bumps are, a GP review can help confirm the cause and discuss suitable skin-care options.

Your doctor heard a heart murmur β€” what does it actually mean? ❀️

A heart murmur is an extra or unusual sound heard during a heartbeat. Some murmurs are harmless, while others may be linked to problems with the heart valves or the way blood is flowing through the heart.

Depending on the cause, some people may have no symptoms at all. Others may experience:
β€’ Shortness of breath
β€’ Chest discomfort
β€’ Dizziness or fainting
β€’ Fatigue
β€’ Palpitations
β€’ Swelling in the legs or ankles

If a heart murmur has been detected, your GP may recommend further assessment such as an ECG, blood tests or an echocardiogram depending on your symptoms and medical history.

⚠️ If you develop severe chest pain, significant shortness of breath, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek urgent medical care.

Waking up several times a night to urinate? It could be nocturia.

Nocturia means waking during the night to pass urine. While it can become more common with age, frequent night-time urination may also be linked to other health issues and shouldn’t always be dismissed as β€œjust getting older”.

Possible causes can include:
β€’ Enlarged prostate
β€’ Overactive bladder
β€’ Diabetes
β€’ Urinary tract problems
β€’ Sleep apnoea
β€’ Heart or kidney conditions
β€’ Certain medicines or drinking too much fluid late in the evening

If night-time urination is repeatedly disturbing your sleep or has recently become worse, a GP review can help identify the cause and guide the right treatment.
