What your nails are exposed to each day makes a difference.

A few things worth trying:
- gloves for washing up and cleaning
- oil or hand cream on nails and cuticles before bed
- filing in one direction
- an acetone-free polish remover
- keeping nails shorter while they’re fragile

You don’t need to do them all. One or two is a good start.

Which of these do you already do?

It’s a common belief that weak nails mean you need more calcium.

Nails are mostly made of keratin, a protein, and contain very little calcium. Their strength comes mainly from how tightly the keratin is bonded and how much moisture the nail holds.

Protein intake, hydration, frequent hand washing, and hormonal changes can all play a part.

So it’s usually less about one missing mineral and more about the bigger picture.

Maybe you’ve noticed it when you’re paying at the counter or holding a cup of tea with a friend. You catch sight of a split nail or a peeling edge and find yourself curling your fingers in a little.

It’s such a small thing, and most of us wouldn’t say anything about it. But when it’s happening alongside other changes in midlife, like your skin, hair, or energy, it can add to that feeling of not quite recognising your own body.

I don’t think noticing that is vain at all. It’s often just your body letting you know something has shifted.

Have you ever caught yourself hiding your hands?

Let’s stop comparing ourselves to the 20-year-old version 🛑

Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.

She’s not relevant anymore. We are entirely different beings.
The way we metabolise food is different. The way we need to move is different.

And it’s a joy to embrace that and step into our wisdom, instead of grasping for a youthfulness that society loves to celebrate but that we simply are not now.

We are not trying to get her back.

We are wise women. 🪶

I think nail changes are one of those things we can put up with for quite a while before we really think about them.

Maybe your nails used to grow easily, and now they split as soon as they get any length. Or perhaps they’ve gradually become thinner, drier, or more fragile, and you can’t quite remember when that started.

Because it’s usually more annoying than disruptive, it can be easy to just keep filing them down and carrying on.

So I’m curious, when did you first notice your nails had started to change, and what was different about them?

How I look at your nails, as a clinical naturopath. 💅

Not for the polish. For the information.
Ridging. White spots. Brittleness. Slow growth. Peeling. Pale beds.

Every one of these is your body communicating a nutritional or hormonal gap — and in perimenopause when oestrogen is declining and collagen production is dropping, your nails are often one of the first places it shows up.

Zinc. Iron. Biotin. Silica. Protein. Stomach acid. Thyroid function. Gut health. All of this can show up on a nail.

5 things I said no to in perimenopause 🙅‍♀️

❌ Abandoning myself
❌ Putting myself last
❌ Relationships that drain me
❌ Neglecting my health
❌ Stinky synthetic perfume and laundry liquid

The first four took inner work. The last one took reading a label 😅 and might surprise you — but endocrine disrupting chemicals hiding in your favourite scents are a real and underestimated factor in hormonal health.

Perimenopause has a way of making your non-negotiables very clear.

Best list I ever made….What’s yours? 💛🌿

Brittle nails can be one of those things you put up with for ages... keeping them short, filing the edges when they split or trying yet another nail product.

But if your nails have become noticeably more brittle than they used to be, particularly through perimenopause, it can be useful to look at what else is going on.

Nutrition can play a part, as can hormonal changes, thyroid health, medications, and simply what your hands are exposed to every day. And sometimes there are other changes happening alongside your nails that are worth mentioning too.

A health assessment gives us time to go through what you’ve noticed and work out what may be relevant for you, rather than assuming you just need a nail supplement.

When your nails keep splitting or breaking, it’s easy to focus on what you’re putting on them... but what you’re eating matters too.

Protein provides the building blocks for keratin, while iron, zinc, biotin (B7), vitamin C and omega-3s all play a role in supporting healthy nail growth.

Before reaching for another nail supplement, have a look at what you’re getting through food across the week.

And if your nails have noticeably changed despite eating well, there may be other things worth exploring.
