Welcome to the team, Caitlin and Maddi! πŸŽ‰

We're thrilled to welcome two wonderful new people to Journey Connect this week.

Caitlin Deakes joins us as an Advanced Specialist Positive Behaviour Support Clinician, supporting and mentoring our practitioner team across South East Queensland. Caitlin brings more than 30 years across early childhood education and disability, including leading Griffith University's Tallowwood early learning centre, followed by four years as a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner at Advanced level. She's passionate about attachment-based, play-based and trauma-informed practice and the Circle of Security, and she believes that beneath every behaviour is a feeling and a need. Outside work, Caitlin is a Laughter Yoga Leader, a devoted dog mum to two cavaliers, and a proud Brisbane Lions fan.

Madison (Maddi) Bourne joins our Townsville team as a new practitioner. Maddi holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science and brings strong frontline experience from Child Safety, including as the on-island Child Safety Officer for Palm Island, and most recently as Child Protection Advisor at Miya Services. She's passionate about helping people feel heard and understood, getting to the reasons behind behaviour, and supporting people towards the goals that matter to them.

Together, Caitlin and Maddi strengthen our ability to deliver specialist, rights-based behaviour support across Queensland. Please join us in giving them a big welcome! πŸ‘‹

Got a pile of NDIS invoices you've been meaning to sort? This one's for you.
The NDIS Act changes are now law, and one date matters for nearly everyone: from 1 December 2026, claims must be made within 90 days of the support being delivered.
A few other changes are worth knowing too. There are new rules on who can ask for an unscheduled reassessment (from 27 August 2026), and participants and plan managers now need to keep payment records for 3 years.
We've summarised all five changes on our blog in plain language. Share it with anyone who self-manages, because they're the ones most likely to get caught out.

A lot of families have been asking us the same thing this month: "Is my NDIS plan getting cut?" πŸ’¬

Here's the honest answer.

From 1 October 2026, two budget areas are changing:

Social, economic and community participation: down 50%
Improved daily living skills: down 10%
This only affects your plan when it's created or reassessed from 1 October 2026, or renewed from 1 February 2027.

Critical supports like personal care at home, SDA, home modifications and consumables are not affected.

Not sure where your plan sits? Call our team on 1300 58 1990. We're happy to talk it through.

Behaviour is communication πŸ§ πŸ’›
At Journey Connect, we look beyond what we see - because behaviours like anger, defiance, avoidance, or withdrawal often reflect deeper feelings of fear, shame, and a need for safety and connection.
When we understand the why, we can respond with empathy, set safe boundaries, and provide the right support.
Discover how our NDIS Positive Behaviour Support approach helps decode behaviours and build meaningful connections, reach out today.

MayDay, MayDay! Calling amazing humans! It's time again for our next Support Worker recruitment drive.

Did you go or watch the Sydney Olympics? Did you listen to the Bangles or A-HA.. did you enjoy dancing along to Cotton eye Jo or even cheer on when Australia won the America's Cup?

Disability doesn't have an age - it doesn't stop when you turn 40, it doesn't go away and you don't 'get over' a disability like a cold. So this means people of ALL ages and stages can be great support workers. People who may not have experience as a Support Worker, but have awesome life experience make great support workers. Know someone with a few greys, loves to knit, or tells awesome Dad jokes? We want to talk to them!

We will have 2 dates in June for intake induction (full day paid), so get in quick as once we have filled all required spots, we close this window.

What can shame look like in behaviour?

It may present as denial, blaming, minimising, lying, or anger, not always as intentional defiance, but as a protective strategy when someone feels emotionally unsafe.

When we understand behaviour through a trauma-informed lens, we create opportunities for connection, regulation, and growth.

At Journey Connect, we believe behaviour makes sense when we understand the story behind it. πŸ’™
