Feeling understood and supported matters for parents and carers too.

At AAA, we value the knowledge families bring. Listening to your experiences, celebrating progress together and making space for honest conversations are all part of supporting your child at AAA.

Choice can be really helpful when a child is finding a demand or situation difficult.

Instead of leaving everything open-ended, we can offer two options that both work. The boundary stays the same, but the child has some control over how they move through it. It might be choosing where to sit, which activity to start with, or whether they need some help or want to try independently first. Small choices can make expectations feel much more manageable.

There is something pretty special about hearing our kids explain how their own brains work. 💜

We used NeuroClastic’s My Brain Is Autistic resource to explore the idea that our brains can be a bit like roadmaps. Some things might have a big, clear highway. Other things might involve a winding road, a detour, a bridge or a path that takes a little more effort to travel.

The kids then created their own brain roadmaps, thinking about what feels easy for them, what can be harder, and what their individual map might look like. There was no right roadmap to create because no two brains are exactly the same.

Building this kind of self-understanding is important. When children understand more about how their own brain works, they can begin to recognise their strengths, understand what they find difficult and learn what helps them. We loved hearing them explain their maps in their own words.

Activity inspired by NeuroClastic’s My Brain Is Autistic NeuroInclusive Story.

“It’s great that we all communicate differently.”

Communication does not have to look the same for everyone. Some children use lots of words, some need more processing time, some communicate through movement, facial expression, gesture or showing us what they mean. Different doesn't need to become the same. We can learn to understand each other.

An AAA mum shared this beautiful conversation with us 💜 What began as a request to film the cat turned into a conversation about autism, coping and how she sees herself.

Her mum told us: “She owns it and sees it as a wonderful thing.”

At AAA, we want our kids to feel understood, recognise their needs and know they are valued as they are. Hearing that Charlie feels so positively about her autistic identity means so much to us. Thank you to her and her mum for sharing this moment 💜💜💜

Week 1: Can you believe we are already in Term 4?!
A beautiful week getting back into routines, playing new games, connecting with friends, some cleaning, tidying, organising, and even some cooking with Kelli!

When big feelings take over, processing language can become much harder.

This is usually not the time for lots of questions, explanations or problem solving. At AAA, we often reduce how much we are saying and keep our communication simple and familiar. We can come back to the conversation once the child is feeling more regulated and has more capacity to take it in.

Less language does not mean less support; sometimes it is exactly what support needs to look like in that moment.
