🧠 Making the Most of Your Memory

Over the past six weeks, Dovida Tweed & Northern Rivers has been involved in the very informative pilot program, Making the Most of Your Memory, held at the Aero Club Ballina.

The six-session program was developed and led by Anne Moehead, Dementia Inclusive Ballina servicing Northern Rivers, with the support of the committee, in collaboration with Dr Rachel Jones, Geriatrician, who recognised the potential value of the program for people living with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), retired Geropsychologist Ian Johnston, and students from Southern Cross University. A variety of specialist guest speakers also contributed throughout the six weeks.

The sessions explored stages and types of memory, how neurological conditions can affect memory, and practical tips and strategies to support and improve memory — along with much more.

Dovida was pleased to support the group while also learning valuable information and practical strategies that can benefit our clients living with MCI and their families.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making this program such a success. We certainly learnt a lot! 💜

We look forward to seeing Making the Most of Your Memory continue next year and providing another valuable opportunity for our community.

🎉 Two years of connection, support, information and a whole lot of community!

Today’s October meeting of the Murwillumbah Parkinson’s Support Group marked our second anniversary — and what a wonderful way to celebrate.

A huge thank you to Murwillumbah Services Memorial Club for being such fabulous hosts over the past two years. From providing the function room at no charge, to setting up the tables each month and ensuring there are jugs of water on every table — we simply couldn’t do it without your ongoing support. 💙

We’d also like to acknowledge Dovida for its ongoing support of this very important community initiative, led by Parkinson's NSW and facilitated with the support of Dovida Tweed & Northern Rivers’ Community Liaison Manager, Leigh Matthews, together with the support of Mitch Barnes from Agile Exercise Physiology and Mel Desmond from Balance Mobility.

Today we were lucky enough to have The Community Transport Company’s Area Manager Karen Orr, join us to share valuable information about transport services across our region — something that is vital for many of our members.

Parkinson’s Nurse Rebecca Manners also brought us an insight into the latest developments in Parkinson’s following her recent attendance at the World Parkinson’s Congress in Phoenix, Arizona. Fascinating and incredibly informative!

As always, Mitch Barnes, our resident exercise physiologist had us moving and put us through our paces — ensuring we could enjoy our anniversary cake completely guilt-free! 🎂😂

And speaking of cake… today just happened to be one of our members’ birthdays too. What are the chances?

Thank you to everyone who has supported, attended and helped make this group what it is over the past two years.

If you’re newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s, living with Parkinson’s, or supporting someone on their Parkinson’s journey, we’d love to see you.

Important information for Dementia Action Week! Looking after our brain!

It’s Dementia Action Week.

Looking after your brain starts with small, everyday habits. Regular physical activity, including both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, helps keep your brain healthy and can help lower your risk of dementia.

Whether it's a walk, a swim, gardening or strength activities, every bit of movement counts.

Our recent September barbecue for Dementia Inclusive Ballina servicing Northern Rivers (DIB) was a wonderful opportunity for Dovida staff from across the Gold Coast, Tweed and Northern Rivers to come together and support this fantastic volunteer-led organisation.

Our roles usually have us out on the road connecting with clients and community members, so it’s always great to catch up, have some fun, dance to some music and cook literally hundreds of sausages — all while raising money for DIB.

Despite the inclement weather and plenty of rain, we still managed to raise more than $1,850 — a fantastic result!

A huge thank you to DIB Chair Anne Moehead and Secretary Meg Pickup for organising all the sausages and bread and keeping us on track throughout the day! 😂

Many thanks to our Business Operations Manager, Lee-Anne, and Business Development Manager, David, who travelled down from the Gold Coast, as far away as Pimpama, to join us. And to our wonderful Care Managers Feonie, Trudi and Ani, who came along from Tweed and Northern Rivers.

It’s always a fun day, and even better knowing we’re supporting such an important local organisation. ❤️

A big thank you to Vicki Hughes from Seniors Rights Service and Virginia Beaufort from Rainbow Region Dementia Doula for speaking at today’s Parkinson's NSW Murwillumbah Parkinson’s Support Group today.

It’s important for people living with Parkinson’s and their carers to know what support is available in our community, as well as the variety of services and resources that may be available to them.

Everyone’s Parkinson’s journey is different, and their needs can vary greatly. Having access to the right information, support and connections can make such a difference.

Thank you, Vicki and Virginia, for sharing your knowledge and helping our group better understand the support available within our community. 💙

Thanks to Dovida Tweed & Northern Rivers’ for supporting the group each month and to Mel from Balance Mobility and Mitch from Agile Exercise Physiology who bring specialist knowledge each month that is invaluable to all those that attend.

With the Northern Rivers having a higher prevalence of Parkinson’s disease than the national average, it’s so important that we recognise those living with Parkinson’s in our community with dignity, understanding and respect.

As Michael J. Fox so powerfully reminds us, people living with Parkinson’s don’t need to be “fixed”. They need to be supported, understood and valued for who they are.

Take a moment to watch Michael’s post. His words are a powerful reminder that Parkinson’s may be part of someone’s life, but it does not define who they are. 💙

Making the Most of Your Memory 🧠

Tuesday, 1 September, marked the first of six sessions in the “Making the Most of Your Memory” program for people living with mild cognitive impairment.

The program was developed following geriatrician Dr Rachel Jones’ recognition of the need for a dedicated program to support people living with mild cognitive impairment. Together with Anne Moehead, Chair of Dementia Inclusive Ballina servicing Northern Rivers, the program provides practical education, tips and strategies to help participants improve their memory and remember and retain information that can be useful in everyday life.

Anne brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program, with 45 years in nursing and the health sector, including her experience as a nurse practitioner.

The six-week program also brings together a range of people with valuable knowledge and experience, with different guest contributors joining throughout the sessions, including Southern Cross University students and Ian Johnston, retired academic, geropsychologist and dementia specialist.

Dovida Tweed & Northern Rivers are incredibly grateful to Rachel, Anne and the team at Dementia Inclusive Ballina for welcoming us and allowing us to participate in this valuable six-week program.

For our team, it’s a wonderful opportunity to listen, learn and broaden our understanding of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, helping us to continue building our knowledge and providing meaningful support to people living in our local community.

Tuesday’s first session was incredibly informative, and we’re looking forward to the next five weeks.

Thank you, Rachel, Anne and the Dementia Inclusive Ballina team, for sharing your knowledge with us and for allowing Dovida to be part of this important initiative. 💜
