🤦🏻‍♀️ it's 2026. Why are we still having to fight for birth choices? We've moved forward in so many ways, so why are women's birth choices at risk of moving backwards?

Women deserve choice. Women deserve continuity of care. Women deserve better.

Imagine having to leave your home, your family and your community to give birth in a hospital hours away. Having to organise accommodation, childcare, or time off work just to access maternity care. Imagine travelling hundred of kilometres for routine appointments, navigating pregnancy and early parenthood without the continuity of care you had hoped for.

Unfortunately, for families in regional, rural and remote Australia, these aren’t far fetched scenarios. They are very real consequences of an already fragile maternity care system losing yet another option.

Changes to professional indemnity insurance arrangements raise serious concerns about the future of homebirth access across Australia, particularly for women and families living in regional and rural communities.

This is bigger than how any one of us chooses to birth. It's about protecting choices for women today and for generations to come. You don't have to have had a homebirth to care about birth choice. You just have to believe women deserve options.

That's why I’ll be supporting The Grandmother of All Rallies — right here in Mackay.

I’m incredibly proud to be partnering with my local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Service to help bring MAYPILAMA: Keel Line of Creation to Mackay Cinemas this December.

📍 Thursday 3 December
🕙 10am and 6:30pm

This powerful Yolŋu-led documentary follows Elder Ḻäwurrpa Maypilama’s journey to return birthing to Country. It’s a story of women, babies, culture, sovereignty and the importance of respecting and carrying cultural knowledge forward.

This documentary holds a special place for me, particularly as the film’s partner organisation is also the organisation I’m completing my doula training with. It brings together so many things I care deeply about — birth, community, culture and the importance of listening to the people who hold that knowledge.

This isn’t a film about defining “the Indigenous way of birth”. It’s an opportunity to listen to a Yolŋu story, led by Yolŋu voices and cultural knowledge holders, and to reflect on what birth, belonging and culturally safe care can mean within our own communities.

I hope our Mackay community will come along with open hearts and a willingness to listen, learn and reflect.

🎟️ See the graphic for screening details and ticket information, or send me a DM if you’d like to know more.

Advocacy during pregnancy and birth is about making sure the person giving birth is heard, respected and included in conversations about their own care.

Sometimes advocacy looks like asking a question. Sometimes it’s asking for something to be explained another way. Sometimes it’s creating space for someone to speak, reminding them that they have choices, or simply sitting beside them while they find the words.
And sometimes, it’s recognising that a person doesn’t need someone to speak for them. They need someone who will support them to speak for themselves.

As a doula, I don’t come into your birth with an agenda or all the answers. I come to support you in finding your voice, understanding your options and feeling confident to make the decisions that are right for you. Because your birth isn’t a room for everyone else to have a voice in while yours gets lost.

Pain in labour is never experienced in exactly the same way. This is because pain in labour is more than a physical sensation. It is shaped by our bodies, our emotions, our life experiences, our beliefs, our fears and the stories of birth we have heard throughout our lives. For some women, labour feels empowering. For others, it can feel overwhelming, intense or frightening. For many, it is a mixture of all these things.

The way we grow up viewing birth can influence how we approach it. When birth is spoken about only in terms of danger, pain and risk, it can be difficult not to carry those expectations with us into labour. But birth can also be approached with trust, preparation, support and an understanding that our bodies are capable of incredible things — while recognising that every birth is different.

As a doula, I don’t promise pain-free birth and I don’t believe there is only one right way to labour. Instead, I offer a steady presence, compassionate support and a range of comfort measures to help you navigate the intensity of labour in a way that feels right for you.

Movement, water, breathing, touch, positioning, reassurance and continuous emotional support can all play a role. And when medical pain relief is wanted or needed, that choice deserves the same respect and support.

Birth can take us to vulnerable places. With the right support, you can feel heard, held and respected through those moments — whatever your birth journey looks like 🫶🏼

Your birth journey is personal so your support should be too.
There is no one way to experience pregnancy, birth or becoming a parent.
Some people want lots of support during pregnancy.
Some want someone beside them during birth.
Some need practical help once their baby arrives.
Some want a little of everything.
Your needs might change along the way too.
That’s why I believe doula support shouldn’t be about fitting yourself into a predetermined package.
It should be about listening to you, understanding what matters to you, and creating support around your individual needs.
Your choices.
Your circumstances.
Your family.
Your birth.
Your path.
You don’t have to follow someone else’s path to have a positive experience.
And you don’t have to fit into someone else’s idea of what doula support should look like either.

Personalised pregnancy, birth & postpartum support

Recently in my doula studies I have been learning about body systems and it has genuinely fascinated me just how interconnected things are!
I’ve been working through the cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, endocrine, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems, and now moving into the integumentary and nervous systems.

I’ve particularly loved learning about the endocrine and reproductive systems, but what has really taken me by surprise is how much everything influences and relies on one another.
The more I learn, the more I realise that nothing in the body is working in isolation. Every system has its role, but they are constantly communicating, adapting and working together in ways we don’t even have to consciously think about!

Then when you begin to look at pregnancy, birth and postpartum through that lens, it gives you an even greater appreciation for the complexity of what the body is doing.

Now more than ever I feel nowhere near finished learning 😅 but this actually makes perfect sense to me because supporting women and families well should be about continuing to learn, asking questions and deepening understanding.

Support that fits you, because no two births, or families, are the same.
As She Holds More Doula Service continues to evolve, so does the way I support you.

I’m moving towards a more personalised approach to doula support — one that is shaped around you, your family, your birth preferences and what you need most.

Whether you’re planning a:
• Hospital, home or birth centre birth
• Vaginal birth, induction or VBAC
• Epidural or caesarean birth
• First baby or adding to your family

Your support can be tailored to your unique journey. You might need more support during pregnancy and less postpartum. You might want someone beside you throughout your birth. You might need practical postpartum support once your baby arrives. Or you might want a combination that looks completely different.
That’s the point.
Your pregnancy.
Your birth.
Your family.
Your support.

Bookings are now open for January, February & March 2027. If you’re looking for compassionate, personalised doula support, I’d love to talk 🫶🏼

Visualisation can be a simple tool to use during pregnancy and birth.
It isn’t about imagining the “perfect birth” or convincing yourself that everything will go exactly to plan.
It can be about creating a mental picture of how you want to feel.
🍃 Imagine yourself taking one breath at a time.
🍃 Imagine relaxing your jaw and softening your shoulders.
🍃 Imagine hearing your support person’s voice and feeling grounded by their presence.
🍃 Imagine moving through each wave knowing you can take the next one as it comes.
🍃 Imagine yourself surrounded by people who make you feel safe, heard and supported.

And perhaps most importantly, visualise yourself being able to adapt. Because birth can be unpredictable.

Your visualisation doesn’t have to be about a particular birth outcome. It can be about confidence, calm, connection and trust in yourself.

You can practise it during pregnancy, during early labour, between contractions or whenever you need to come back to. You don’t have to know exactly how your birth will unfold. You can prepare for how you want to feel while you’re moving through it.
