Some habits deserve to be left on read 💅

When nature calls, answer! Regularly holding it in can contribute to constipation and weaken those natural signals.

📱 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁
Your toilet isn’t your second office! Put the phone down, slow down and give your body a chance to switch into rest-and-digest mode. We don’t need constant stimulation, especially on the loo! 💩

☀️ 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
Your colon naturally becomes more active after waking and eating. Give your bowels time to do their thing!

Supplements have their place, and whole foods offer fibre variety that feeds your gut bugs! Without enough fluid, bulk-forming fibre can make constipation worse.

Hydration helps keep stools soft. Electrolytes can help replace what you’re losing through sweat, especially in our NQ heat!

🚽 HOW LONG IS TOO LONG ON THE TOILET? ⏰💩

We’ve talked about toilet posture, the pubore**alis muscle and why you might not feel completely empty after a bowel movement.

There’s another important factor in healthy bowel function…

HOW LONG ARE YOU ACTUALLY SITTING THERE? 👀

Your bowel movements rely on a coordinated relationship between your digestive system, nervous system and pelvic floor muscles.

And spending longer on the toilet doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll empty more effectively!

❤️ THE 5-MINUTE GUIDE

As a general rule, aim to spend around 5 minutes on the toilet rather than sitting for extended periods.

Here’s why ↓

💙 PRESSURE ON THE RE**UM
Prolonged sitting, particularly when combined with straining, can increase pressure on the blood vessels around the re**um and a**s, contributing to haemorrhoids.

❤️ PELVIC FLOOR FUNCTION
Repeated pushing places additional pressure on your pelvic floor muscles, which are responsible for supporting and coordinating bowel movements.

💙 YOUR BODY’S NATURAL SIGNALS
When stool enters the re**um, stretch receptors send signals to your brain, creating the urge to go.

If that urge isn’t there, forcing a bowel movement isn’t necessarily going to help.

💩 OUR TOP TOILET TIPS

✓ Keep your knees higher than your hips.
✓ Lean slightly forward and relax your belly.
✓ Breathe naturally - avoid holding your breath.
✓ Don’t force it or strain excessively.
✓ If nothing happens after a few minutes, get up and try again later.

✨ THE BIGGER PICTURE

Healthy bowel function isn’t just about how often you go.

It’s about how comfortably, effectively and naturally your body empties.

If you’re regularly spending 10–20 minutes trying to pass a bowel movement, it may be worth investigating constipation, stool consistency or pelvic floor coordination.

Your toilet isn’t a waiting room… and your bowel movements shouldn’t feel like a workout! 💩

💩 GOING EVERY DAY DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN YOU’RE EMPTYING COMPLETELY

Ever been to the toilet, only to feel like there’s still more to come?

This is known as incomplete bowel evacuation, and it’s more common than you might think.

Your bowel movements rely on several processes working together, including intestinal motility, stool consistency, re**al sensation and pelvic floor coordination.

When one of these isn’t functioning effectively, you may experience:

💙 Feeling like there’s still stool left behind
❤️ Returning to the toilet multiple times
💙 Straining despite passing stool
❤️ Bloating or abdominal discomfort
💙 A persistent urge to go, even after a bowel movement

SO WHAT COULD BE CONTRIBUTING?

Constipation, pelvic floor dysfunction, IBS, certain medications and changes in bowel motility can all play a role.

And here’s something worth remembering…

FREQUENCY ≠ COMPLETE EVACUATION

You can have a bowel movement every day and still experience constipation or difficulty emptying.

Supporting healthy bowel function involves more than simply counting how often you go.

Hydration, adequate fibre, movement and proper toilet posture can all help. Persistent symptoms deserve further investigation.

It’s not just about how often you go.
It’s about how comfortably and effectively you go 💩

🚽 TOILET POSTURE: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ANGLE!

Did you know the position you sit in can influence how effectively you empty your bowels?

It comes down to a muscle called the pubore**alis.

This muscle forms a sling around the re**um, creating what’s known as the anore**al angle.

❤️ When sitting upright: The anore**al angle can remain more pronounced, meaning stool may require more effort to pass.

🩵 When your knees are elevated: The pubore**alis muscle can relax further, allowing the anore**al angle to straighten and reducing resistance during bowel movements.

Why does this matter? ↓

A more supported toileting position may help:

✓ Reduce excessive straining
✓ Encourage easier bowel movements
✓ Support more complete bowel emptying
✓ Reduce discomfort associated with constipation

THE TAKEAWAY?

Elevate your feet, keep your knees above your hips, lean slightly forward and allow your pelvic floor to relax.

Supporting healthy bowel function is as simple as understanding your anatomy 💩

𝗙𝗟𝗢𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗘𝗥? 💩⛵️⚓️

Ever looked in the toilet and wondered why some poos sink… while others are happily sailing around up top? 😂

𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗼 💩
Often comes down to extra gas trapped in the stool.
What you’ve eaten, changes in gut bacteria and fermentation can all play a part.

𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗼 💩
Usually just means your stool is denser and sinking on its own isn’t a sign that something is wrong.

The occasional floater? Usually nothing to panic about.

And if your poo is 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 + greasy, pale, particularly foul-smelling or difficult to flush, it can sometimes be associated with poor fat absorption and is worth chatting to your healthcare professional about.

Because yes…
