If you’ve been told your only options for menopause are to put up with it or take something, you haven’t been told the whole story.

This World Menopause Day, we’re talking about care that looks at your symptoms alongside your long-term health.

Our nurse practitioner Sharon has a special interest in perimenopause and menopause. She can work through strength and movement, protein and nutrition, sleep, alcohol, gut health and any supplements or other supports you’re already using.

We can’t stop menopause, but we can help you manage symptoms and look after your health through this stage of life and beyond. Medication can be part of that conversation, alongside other ways to support you.

Already taking supplements or seeing another practitioner? Bring it all in. No shame, no lecture. Knowing the full picture helps us care for you.

Start with a menopause health assessment with your usual GP. They can arrange ongoing follow-up with Sharon to build a long-term plan that fits your life, your choices and your health.

Thinking about seeing a psychologist but unsure what to expect?

For WA Mental Health Week, we asked Praxis clinical psychologists Gideon and Elissa about what happens in the first appointment, whether you need to be in crisis and what surprises people about therapy. We also asked what they’d say to someone who’s been thinking about it but hasn’t booked.

You don’t need to have all the answers before you start. Your healthcare team is here to help you work through the next steps.

Talk to your GP about a referral or call us on 08 9772 1108 and ask about seeing a psychologist at Praxis.

Healthier at 50 than you were at 40? It’s a goal worth working towards.

Your forties can be a time when blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and weight start changing quietly. You may feel well, but checking in on your health can help pick up changes early.

Prevention is part of healthcare. It means understanding your risks, keeping track of changes and building habits you can stick to. Small, consistent changes often do more for your long-term health than a big overhaul that lasts a fortnight.

If you’re in your forties, book a health check with your GP and talk about which checks you need and how often. Your birthday month can be a useful reminder to make time for yourself.

Future you will thank you.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month, we’re encouraging you to start a conversation with your family.

Do you know whether anyone in your family has had breast or ovarian cancer? Which side of the family they’re on, how they’re related to you and how old they were when diagnosed?

These are useful details to write down and bring to your next appointment. Include both your mum’s and your dad’s side of the family.

You don’t need to have every answer. Bring what you know and we can talk it through together.

“That’s just part of being a woman.”

It’s something far too many women hear when they raise concerns about their health, and we’re here to call BS on it.

Heavy or irregular periods, ongoing pain, mood changes, disrupted sleep or using the same contraception for 10, 15 or 20 years without a review may be common, but common isn’t the same as normal.

Many of these concerns can be assessed and treated. You don’t need to wait until you’re at breaking point, and you don’t have to accept that feeling unwell is simply something you need to live with.

Book a long 30 minute appointment to start the conversation. If you’d like to discuss perimenopause or menopause, you can also book a menopause health assessment for a more focused review.

We will be having a Praxis team meeting Wednesday 23rd September.

Our front reception and phones will be closed, but we will be back in the practice and answering calls from 1pm. If you would like to leave a voicemail, we can call you back once we are in.

These meetings help us to workshop our services, identify gaps, make improvements and share knowledge between our entire team so you receive the most up to date and well thought out care experience. Thanks for your understanding! 🩺❤️

If you’re the adult child helping to organise your parent’s healthcare, there may be support available that your family hasn’t been told about.

Anyone aged 75 and over can have an annual health assessment that looks beyond a single concern. It covers how they’re managing at home, mobility and balance, memory, falls risk, hearing, vision and anything affecting their ability to stay independent.

A longer appointment can also be used to review their full medication list. This helps identify what is still needed, what may be interacting and whether anything could be safely changed or stopped.

Having one practice oversee their care matters too. When someone is seeing multiple specialists, allied health providers and hospitals, it’s easy for information or follow-ups to fall between the gaps. One practice can help hold the whole picture and make sure results and recommendations aren’t missed.

The goal isn’t necessarily to fix everything. It’s to help your loved one keep doing the things that matter to them, for as long as possible, with as much of their care provided locally as possible.

Book at praxismedical.com.au or call 08 9772 1108 and say it is for a 75+ health assessment.

Around one in ten people report being allergic to penicillin, but when properly assessed, up to nine in ten don’t have a true allergy.

Many penicillin allergy labels are added during childhood following a rash or side effect, then remain on someone’s medical record for decades without being reviewed.

An incorrect label can limit which antibiotics you can receive. This may mean being given an alternative that is less suitable for the infection, carries more side effects or contributes more to antibiotic resistance.

At Praxis Medical, Dr Aaron Chiw offers structured penicillin allergy assessments here in Manjimup. This involves looking at what happened, how likely a true allergy is and what testing may be appropriate.

It may be worth having your label reviewed if it came from childhood, you don’t remember the original reaction, you developed a rash while taking antibiotics or you have surgery coming up.

Please do not test this yourself. The point of the process is that it is assessed properly first.

Book an appointment at praxismedical.com.au or call 08 9772 1108 and say you would like your penicillin allergy label reviewed.

Kids Ask, We Answer! "Am I normal?"

It’s a question that often comes up after school health lessons, as children begin comparing themselves with their friends and what they see online.

The simple answer is that bodies develop on their own timetable. Some children start noticing changes earlier, while others develop later, and the range of normal is very wide.

In this month’s Kids Ask, We Answer, Dr Paul explains how to respond plainly without laughing the question off or making it feel like a formal conversation. It can also be a good opportunity to talk about looking after their body and speaking up if anything feels sore or doesn’t seem right.

Boys experience body image pressure too, but they often carry those concerns quietly. If you’d prefer a doctor to have the conversation, your child is welcome to come in with you. Nobody at Praxis will make them feel silly for asking.
